Wellness/Fitness thread 5/1/03 - first day of the month!

  1. And a new chance to start over. Good morning! People are funny - we can't just start new on a Wednesday or on the 11th of a month. It has to be New Year's or a birthday or a Monday. If you are one of those people who needs a symbolic day on which to declare your changes, then why not the first beautiful day of a new month? Join us .

Thanks for all the great info on the exercise equipment. (for Jnette - I think the exercise balls run about $20 at Target/KMart/WalMart. It really does make a difference on the back.) I had a stairclimber at home for a long time that was a nifty clothes rack, but didn't really inspire me to move. We are a little short of extra space being in an apartment, but one of our goals when we buy a house is to build a little gym in the basement.

Do you have your water in hand?

    Have a great day!

3 bean salad (like Grandma's, but not swimming in oil!)

    Ingredients:
1 (16 oz.) pkg frozen green beans (or 1 pound of fresh beans, trimmed and snapped if you're feeling particularly domestic!)
1 1 pound can of garbanzo beans/chick peas
1 1 pound can kidney beans
    1/2 c diced green pepper
    1/3 C. diced onion
    1/2 tsp salt

    Preparation:
Cook the frozen green beans as directed but for only 10 minutes. Plunge the green beans into ice water until cool and drain, set aside to cool.

    Dressing

    1/2 C. Red Wine Vinegar
    1 Tbsp. Sugar
    1/4 tsp. Freshly Ground Pepper
    1/4 tsp. Salt

Rinse and drain canned beans. Pour all beans in a bowl and add bell pepper and onion. Pour dressing on salad and mix well. Salad should set in refrigerate overnight so that the vegetables may marinate. If salad is a little too sharp for your taste after marinating, a little sugar may be added. 1/2 - 1 tsp. mix well.

Here's a few examples of things you can do with the ball, Jnette. The thought on it is that it is constantly working your abs a little just to keep you upright ("stabilizing your core" or some such nonsense .) I like mine.

Where to put it? That is a hard question. I live in a small apartment and have NO where to put it. It is in my room just taking space.

I bought my ball from Kmart. It came with a really cheesy exercise video, but found it really effective when I first started it. Now, my body has gotten used to it, but there are still a few exercises that I like. Pushups are good, and inner thigh squeezes. With the squeezes, you try to squeeze it flat like a pancake with your inner thighs. I love that exercise.

That three bean salad is great for dieters. I prepare it about 3 times a week...it is also sooooooooo good for us.
