Wellness/Fitness thread 4/30/03

  1. Good morning!

It's a great day. I noticed yesterday that a number of people at my work are taking advantage of their lunch time to get out and move. I will grant you that this is not very practical if you are in the hospital, but let's think about other opportunities we may miss for exercising when we are saying we "just don't have time." I personally have wasted more time than I care to think about in front of the tv - and it does nothing to improve my health (well - except Buffy, which can't possibly be bad for me .) Take a half hour out of your evening to move.

Great work everyone who has checked in (and those of you who are doing things quietly as well.) Keep it up!!

I have a question for those of you who may have home exercise stuff (I know J'netter has mentioned a bowflex.) What's your thoughts on the most effective piece or tool? I have an exercise ball and love it to do crunches on. Plus, it was a gift at my request last Christmas, so free to me .

"A great way for to lose weight is to eat naked in front of a mirror. Restaurants will almost always throw you out before you can eat too much."

    - unknown, from "Ruminations and Ponderances"

    Cracked pepper linguini

8 ounces linguine (or whatever pasta), uncooked
    1/4 cup minced onions
    2 cloves garlic, smashed
    1 tablespoon reduced-calorie margarine, melted
1 (8 ounce) carton fat free sour cream
    1 tablespoon skim milk
    1 tablespoon cracked pepper
2 tablespoons freshly grated parmesan cheese
1 1/2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

Cook linguine according to package directions. Drain, set aside, and keep warm.

Saute onion and garlic in margarine in a small frypan over medium heat until onion is crisp tender, set aside.

Combine sour cream, milk, and pepper in a small bowl, stir well.

Combine linguine, onion mixture, and sour cream mixture, toss well. Sprinkle with parmesan cheese and parsley. Serve immediately.

I have a soloflex machine(covered with dust) Not very user friendly. Too many pieces that have to be changed out for the different exercises. I would really like to have one of the exercise balls and maybe one of the exercise band things. In the meantime I just continue to run and walk my two miles daily and am starting to do some crunches and other ab working exercises.

Gave up after 5 days on the Atkins diet. It made me extremely tired. Don't know if anyone else has ever experienced that too. Going to just try to eat a healthy balance from all the food groups. By the way all of the recipes sound delicous. Got to start making them.

    Everyone have a great day.

    Hi All !

Well, was up at 0600 and working out as I was called in to work unexpectedly today.. knew if I didn't hit it then, I wouldn't want to when I got home.

I like the sound of the excercise ball... where can I buy one? Crunches are sooooooooo hard on my neck...

I LOVE my bowflex !!! SO easy to use ! Closest thing to freeweights I know of, and much safer..(don't need a spotter).

Everything is a breeze.. extremely userfriendly. And quick changes. A real snap.

I have the rubberband thing I take along when I travel.. just can't
find one "strong" enough.. by that I mean, they're too easy/light.. not enough tension. Anyone know where I can get one with more resistance?

I have a TOTAL GYM- works the entire body with your own weight as resistance, easy to use and I see results (when I use it ).

Jnette, I use the bands as well when I travel. It's nice to be able to do a mini workout in a hotel room when time is limited. I've had mine for several years-they came with different tapes, equipment-so I'm not much help on where to get them. Can you increase the amount of tension on the band by shortening the length of it in any way? I bet you could find them on the net *somewhere*

    Have a great night!

I was invited by a co-worker to join her at Curves for a workout this morning. It was a pretty comprehensive workout for thirty minutes. I don't think I'll be trading my Y membership for a Curves though.

I would like to try a bowflex. Even if I liked it I couldn't get one though. There is absolutely nowhere to put it in this house!

I have a treadmill and a stationary bike.
My cardiologist told me to walk on the treadmill 30 min for each hour I sit at the computer.
That has cut down on the time I sit here.
I like both the bike and the treadmill. I also belong to a gym and like all the weight machines. I'm working on strengthening and toning right now.
    This is an interesting thread.
