Wellness/Fitness thread 4/10/03

  1. I got to thinking as I was in the grocery store yesterday about all the stuff on magazine covers this time of year that promises to give you a bikini-worthy-body by June, or some variation thereof. Is spot training an option? Yes and no. Cardio activity has to come first. If you're interested in firming up, you first have to increase your metabolism through aerobic activity and weight comes off that way. Then you can tone, which increases your muscle mass, causing more calories to burn at a resting state. Wherever the weight went on last is generally where it will come off first.

All that said, I have long since stop fretting about that bikini-perfect body. We've had girls in the office recently looking for prescriptions for amphetamines for weight loss. How sad that they, looking perfectly healthy and trim, were so concerned about 5 pounds that they would want to endanger their health to achieve it. We all have our imperfections. The key is to do this for your health. Vanity will come along for the ride and will eventually get rewarded, too .

    Nurse Ratched,

I just wanted to thank you for your daily postings for wellness. I have been quite lazy for the past year since I started working full time and got out of school mode.

However, lately I have really been wanting to get back into shape... my issue is more of a fitness issue ( I have actually lost weight since I stopped working out) But my muscle has turned to big old flab.... hehe.

Anyway, I just wanted to thank you bc your daily postings have been a kick in my butt to get my motivated.... I am breaking out the running shoes today!!!!

Hope you don't mind me joining your fitness club

    Thank you,

    Sara

I did my aerobics on the eliptical trainer this morning while watching gunsmoke. An old episode with Jan Michael Vincent as the rebel kid.
Anyway, after 3 days of doing nothing it sure felt good to break a sweat again.
I have found myself looking forward to this daily thread.
Oh, I weighed myself this morning and no change on the scale but I feel better. Will drink lots of water today.

I worked out yesterday at the gym.

I'm going to yoga class to tonight.

Russell, if you like to sweat try Bikhram's Yoga, or hot yoga, which is done in a room heated to 95-105 degrees, talk about breaking a sweat. I love it!

Glad you all enjoy the thread - I like starting it . It's nice to feel like you're not struggling alone!

We should differentiate between weight and mass and inches. We all know that muscle weighs more than fat, but it burns more calories at a resting state, so it is preferable for purposes of being "trim." We can lose inches without losing weigh per se.

Here's your recipe for the day:

    Tomato broccoli bake

3/4 cup uncooked elbow macaroni (I like the whole wheat pasta)
    1 medium onion, thinly sliced
    1 garlic clove, minced
2 tsp butter or stick margarine
    2 cups chopped fresh broccoli
    2 cups chopped tomatoes
1/2 cup minced fresh parsley (or about 1 tblsp dried)
    1 tsp chicken bouillon granules
    1/4 tsp salt
    1/4 tsp dried oregano
    1/4 tsp dried basil
1 cup (4 oz) reduced fat shredded cheddar cheese, divided

Cook macaroni according to package directions, drain and set aside. In saucepan, saute onion and garlic in butter until tender. Add remaining ingredients except cheese. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer for three minutes. Stir in macaroni and 3/4 cup of cheese.

Transfer to 2 quart baking dish coated with nonstick spray. Cover and bake at 375 for 20 minutes or until heated through. Uncover, sprinkle with remaining cheese and bake 5 minutes longer or until cheese is melted.

(I have also "cheated" and used the microwave for this dish .)

I'm not willing to own up to anything specific, but lets just say there's a reason I don't bring canned frosting into my home anymore lol.

I think stale Fritos are less bad for you because you enjoy them less .

I think Fritos are nasty anyway even if they're fresh. But I can't stop with the pringles....
I like to run and take tap dancing classes on tuesday's and you wouldn't think so but it's as anaerobic as anything. Phew. It feels great though when the endorphins kick in after running. Aah.

The plan is the treadmill and wts later this evening...I have some job induced aggression that I need to sweat out!

Rusty, I agree-I, too, look forward to these posts from Ratched!!

Nurse Ratched, I'm still relativley new to the board in general-was looking at your profile-just curious about your backround...Do you teach a college level health course? If so, do you implement anything like this there ?

    Have a great night!

I look forward to your thread too and feel sooo guilty when I see it and didn't do my walk!

The past couple days have been frigid here, so I didn't walk Fattie in the mornings. But the weather is starting to warm up to the 50's, so yesterday after dinner I walked and it was still enjoyable. As the weather gets nicer out I hope to walk before work. The only problem now with daylight savings time is it's kinda dark at 5 am!
