Waxing, shaving, and other ways to be hair-free

  1. Was there a thread on this topic recently? Seems like I remember seeing a discussion of it somewhere, but perhaps it was another board..

    Anyway....

I have long legs - combine that with my dark, coarse hair, my limited free time, and two little boys interrupting every time Mom is in the bathroom (you Moms know what I'm talking about) - shaving ends up being a PITA.

But maybe I'm just not doing it right. I love the intuition razors, but it seems like I end up shaving every 2 days to stay stubble free. Anyone ever used a women's electric razor?

    What about the epilator thing?

I tried some at home wax last night and that didn't go over so well. Maybe it's worth paying to have my legs/armpits/bikini waxed at a salon? I think I could tolerate the pain, but maybe not the embarrasment (brazilian wax?).

The epilator (EpiLady) is a torture device.

Even though the depilatory creams are stinky and messy, at least the hair growing is isn't scratchy.

Let it grow!! Florence Nightengale did'nt shave her legs. Neither did Betsy Ross, or Marie Curie, and lots of other famous women. :chuckle

Manna have you tried some of the "shave reducing lotions?" I think they work pretty well in terms of reducing the frequency of times you shave per week.

I wax my eyebrows myself and would get everything else done if I could afford it. I'm sure it's painful, but after you do it a few times, I'll bet you get used to it.

Waxing creates a LOT of ingrown hairs for me, no matter what direction i do it in, or how much i exfoliate, or what kind of lotions i use. It's simply not worth it to have my legs looking like a raging case of the measles.

I started a thread about this a while back.

I wish I had answers, but have the same problems you do, except for the little boys interrupting. In the summer I have to shave every single day to get a close shave, and even then it really isn't that close.

I was interrested in getting my legs waxed but you have to let the hair grow out for like a month and half for it to be long enough and I just can't do that, especially in the summer.

I tried Nair, it was awful, it did remove the hair but the very next day is was back, I got the same results as I would have if I shaved.

I seriously am thinking about looking into those "laser" hair removal techniques.

    Manna,
I'm with you! Don't you love taking the chunks out of your shins when your kids let out some blood curdling scream (usually over who had something first blah, blah)? I have the same prob. Even when I have just shaved, my legs are so white and the hair so dark that you can still see little black dots. Time to tan for me.
My only advice is NEVER NEVER NEVER wax your bikini line by yourself at home. I put the wax on both sides at once. After letting out my own blood curdling scream from pulling off the first one, I couldn't bring myself to rip the second one off. No way! I walked around for a week waiting for the hair to grow enough that I could slip a pair of scissors under the cloth strip. Not nice, since any exposed wax sticks to anything. Middle of the night code, had to pee reallyyyyyy bad, ran to the bathroom, practically tore my scrubs off and in the process I got the wax stuck to my underwear so when I tugged them down, Oh man. I hope you will never have any idea how badly that hurts. Now, I have learned that any oil based substance will disolve the wax. Ahhhh, memories.

    OHHH, MAN!

I recently re-read "Bridget Jones' Diary". (hilarious read, BTW) Here's an excerpt:

"Being a woman is worse than being a farmer. There is so much harvesting and crop spraying to be done: legs to be waxed, underarms shaved, eyebrows plucked, feet pumiced, skin exfoliated and moisturized, spots cleansed, roots dyed, eyelashes tinted, nails filed, cellulite massaged, stomach muscles exercised. The whole performance is so highly tuned you only need to neglect it for a few days for the whole thing to go to seed."
