This is not a hoax.
Below is an alert from my local FBI office sent to them from the Department of Homeland Security regarding the latest mass mailing worm attacks and vulnerabilities. It includes a warning that we should expect another new virus outbreak over the weekend of June 7 and 8, 2003. (Notice how the alert has an effective date? Hoaxes live forever. This should not.)
There is also an explanation included regarding why the anti-virus vendorsare unable to react quickly enough during this kind of attack. Many of you got those e-mail messages from "Microsoft.com" which said "Run
the attached program to upgrade to the latest security patch." Those whoopened it helped spread the worm.
If you are running an old, unpatched version of Internet Explorer (e.g.,version 5.0) download and install the security patches for it. They WILL NOT e-mail them to you. Do not count on your anti-virus software to protect you from this new type of attack. Do not open any attachments, even from friends, unless you are expecting them and you know exactly what they are.
If you have control of your e-mail gateway, they recommend "blocking all executable code at their e-mail gateway."
Let's be careful out there.
Practice Safe HEX!
I received this in my email from Best Quotes.com which I know is a reputable website. Not sure if this Hoax is true just wanted to pass it on.
