Vast Quanities of WMD!!!

  1. http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/htm...sianwmd06.html

Unsafe in Russia are 40,000 metric tons of chemical weapons, 600 metric tons of weapons-grade nuclear material and an extensive biological weapons infrastructure. And after 13 years of supposed agreement it is not secure against sale by corrupt insiders [lots of those in Russia] or theft by terrorists.

The US as well as private groups have sent over scientists and others to help find and secure these sites.
There was a recent article regarding what they do and how they do in a recent edition of either Smithsonian or National Geographic.

the point of the GAO report is that the securing is not going as planned
    >>>>But Moscow has grown reluctant to grant access to hundreds of nuclear, chemical and biological sites scattered from Russia's Arctic coast to the Kazakh border, according to a report by General Accounting Office (GAO) inspectors.

In one biological-weapons lab, GAO inspectors found dangerous pathogens kept in rooms secured only by small padlocks and a doorjamb sealed with wax and string. At another, concrete perimeter walls were crumbling after years of neglect.

The United States had hoped to improve security at all 133 buildings that store Russia's weapons-grade nuclear materials by 2008. But the Energy Department, which is performing the work, has been allowed to upgrade just 14 buildings. Russia's Ministry of Atomic Energy has denied access to others for two years. <<<<
    >>>
The report also criticized plans by the Defense Department and the Russian government to improve security at only two of five sites where nerve gases such as VX and sarin are stored. A single drop of either is enough to kill. <<<<

Nuclear weapons scare me the most of all threats. What keeps us alive today is our HUMAN spirit not to ever use them because of their potential for harm done to our species as a whole. My faith in the human race is infinate because we manage to live and survive, despite conflicts and injustices.

What keeps nuclear weapons from being used is their potential harm to our species as a whole, and we all seem to know that, but because so much POTENTIAL exists by having so much Uranium 235 and Plutonium, fear prevails over everyone on earth.

Does this mean that Bush will want to go to war with Russia next? Since he can't seem to find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq (as of today, that is); maybe he will take on Russia next since they do seem to have what he was looking for in Iraq.

Oh, of course. See, we (Americans) purposefully PLANTED those WMD there so that, once we won "the war for oil" over in Iraq, we could move on to our next self-justified conquest, be it Russia or France, whoever looked at us wrong first. Bush will be coming up for re-election, and he'll need a great highlight film for the commercials. We can't wait to further expand our empire!

I'm hoping WMD will be found in Iraq, otherwise our standing in the world will be even more sorry. Maybe Americans are content to support whatever the 'reason of the day' for invading Iraq, but most of the world is not. If the weapons are not found the shred of legitimacy upon which this war was based is POOF...gone.
Hans Blix says President Bush told him last October there were skeptics in the administration who doubted Iraq had any WMD. If you remember, the reports about nuclear development evidence [contract from Niger] was proven fabricated.
I do not pretend to know if there are WMD or not, what I do know is this administration chose invasion, no matter what.

I actually hope we don't find them until all our troops are safe over there, I do not want WMD in the hands of the resistance that is left or the suicide bombers.

I think that fact that we DID find torture chambers, terrorist camps and hundreds of bones and body parts in a mass grave is a chilling discovery in itself. Millions of people were tortured and mutilated without the use of chemical weapons.

I have to disagree. Coalition forces have disarmed a brutal dictator, which in and of itself is a legitimate basis for this war.

Finding and elimimnating WMD's was just one reason for entering this war but it's so bizarre to me that the POTENTIAL for terror is a more compelling reason for war, to some people, than the present, ongoing mass slaughter of real, live people. Weird thought process....

Thanks for posting those articles Linda!

Thanks Linda, and I agree there are many stories out there and more to come.

We seem to be finding much more in Iraq than previously planned.

    Thanks for the articles Linda.

There is still so much to search, hundreds of sites. I think that this war became legit when we first started hearing reports of the mass murders, etc. Last night I saw that the people were telling coalition forces that > 500,000 people had entered a particular building, and never came out. I don't know where they got that figure, and have not found a printed story. It is all so horrifying.
