I'm in VA but it's close enough to DC that I am still in the ghetto. I would rather be anywhere than here most of the time.

Wash. DC is the only place where I wished I had locked my car.
They broke into it RIGHT NEAR THE CAPITOL FOUNTAINS!
I would have thought that DC would be as crime free as it got being the nations capitol and all.
    I was truly disappointed.

    Well,
you know... I'd think our nations capitol would have very little, it ANY crime.
All those lawmakers living there. The reverence everyone has for it. I don't understand of all the places I've traveled in these United States the ONE place I've experienced crime was Washington DC.
Don't you all find that just shocking??

You know what shocked the pants off of me...
(ok... I'll wait while you clear that mental picture LOL :-)
I went to LA to follow up on a security project that I designed for a courthouse there and while I was there I asked where it was safe to go and where to stay away from and the guys there just laughed at me and said "we thought that you would be used to that stuff since you are from DC" they went on to explain that southeast DC is (or atleast was) the murder capital of the country. BTW - I went to LA last fall. Also I live within 10 miles of southwest DC and it's ghetto. I was in the parking lot of the Home Depot about 5 min before that FBI lady got shot by those snipers. I can't WAIT to get out of here.

My husband is working a three week assignment for the GAO and will be in Maryland for the next 2 weeks. He has been there for a week now already. He tells me that Baltimore is a cesspool and that DC is not much better. He says there are homeless people sleeping right in front of the White House.

He and his coworkers went to a fast food drive-thru last week and the person behind the window told them they better get the @#*% out of there if they knew what was good for them! I couldn't believe it. He was also there at the time of the sniper shootings. I'm sick with worry every time he goes down there. He wanted to take me and our kids with him when he first started these away jobs, but now he won't even consider it. The good news is he has one more three week assignment and then he's done with the traveling. I'm so relieved.

It's true, unfortunately. I went to college in the DC area, and I live in Baltimore. DC used to be the murder capital of the country, and now Baltimore is ahead, I think?? We have over 300 murders/year in Baltimore.

But there are really nice parts of both cities, too, you just have to make sure you don't get lost after dark.
