Used laptop question

  1. Ok, I just bought this used laptop IBM thinkpad. I finally got it to get online but now it wont stay online. It keeps bumping me off. Very frustratiing. I am not very compter savvy. Can anyone help me. I am pretty sure it is just a simple setting problem. Thanks for any help.

Are you on dial-up or ethernet?

    Dial up.

I have an IBM Thinkpad - bought new - but would not get a used laptop, especially not from anyone that I did not personally know.

Because of their portability - they are more likely to be damaged - and more expensive to repair. The parts are more delicate.

I have one because I am a travelor and love mine but would never get a used one - too much of someone else's wear, tear, and messups on it.

What sort of message do you get? My first thought would be a loose or damaged connection with your phone cable. That would be the cheapest thing to fix, too. You can pick up a new piece of telephone wire with a jack at each end for a couple of bucks. If the connection is damaged INSIDE the computer, well that's a different story.... Try jiggling the cable a bit and see if that causes it to disconnect.

My hubby had it checked out Sat at the computer shop and they said it was in good shape and should work fine. Most likely the problem is with me. Also is it normal for the laptop to get warm? Thank you for the responses.

Yes, they get quite warm! I even heard about a guy who burned his er... lap... while using one! NO was actually in the newspaper!

What ISP do you use AOL?

If you do i suggest that you go and give AOL a call even though it takes like 1 hour for someone real to answer the phone.

Oh yea and they are suppose to get that hot. Just try to check for where the ventelation holes are at and try not to cover them

Do you have call waiting? If you do, do you get a lot of calls. If you have call waiting you need to turn it off before you dial out or every time someone calls you get booted. I THINK it is *70?? to turn it off.

That's the only thing I can think of!

What internet dial up service do you use? A lot of the local dial up services knock you off really often.

We purchased 3 used laptops from e-bay and have been using them for years without problems, I do not know how to set up anything and am very dependent of my hubby and kids for that but once it is set correctly no problems. Good luck.

Yes that is one reason I stopped the dial up. Keep getting bumped. One post is right on the call waiting. If you don't take it off you will get bumped off line.

Thanks for all the responses. I dont have call waiting. I use the same local internet service I always have. It still works fine on my desktop unit so that is why I am convinced it is a problem with me and the settings. Thanks for trying to help me.
