trouble sleeping

  1. any hints? i can not sleep at the minute, i am waiting for essay results which hasn't helped but i have tried just everything i can think of apart from sleeping pills.

    which i hate as they tend to knock me out for days and i don't have time to sleep that much,

    i am so tired but i can not fall asleep, i tried reading i tried walm milk, i tried relaxing music, i tried using lavender oil.

    i have to be up in six hours yet i am tired but still awake :zzzzz and i hate being tired on placement...

    sorry for babbling and any typos but i have had about ten hours sleep in the past three nights!

    any tips??

    Try reading a boring book. Get your bedroom verrry cooolll and turn down the lights. Try to clear your mind of any troubles. Tell yourself you are just not going to worry about them tonight.
    Wouldn't suggest any Benadryl now-too close to getting up time, but it usually works beautifully for me.

    Check your habits. Are you eating well? Exercising regularly? Keeping a normal "bedtime" routine (e.g. reading, warm bath, no TV in bedroom, etc). Are you going to bed and rising the same time each day? Are you drinking a lot of caffeinated products (even long before bed, they have an effect). When was your last physical exam? You leave me to ask more questions than provide answers---- I am sorry -------but Your post was vague.

    Make sure you are keeping healthy sleeping/lifestyle habits and you may see your quality of sleep improve. If not, see your doctor. Maybe an underlying cause you are not aware of is keeping you from resting well. Best wishes!

    I'm like CLM, watch movie,always puts me to sleep unless I force myself to stay awake.

    When I realy have the wakies and just cannot sleep I try some relaxation therapy - lie down and clench and relax all your muscles one group at a time i.e. start with your face and work to your toes clench on the breath in hold relax on the breath out hold you will end up a LOT more relaxed than if you tried just relaxing your muscles. If that doesn't work try sherry/port - it may not put you to sleep but after a cuople you will stop worrying about being awake:chuckle:

    Just had my worst time ever at placement, and it is because I was eaten at placement today, there was no need, I had done nothing wrong, and was humiliated infront of patients and other staff.

    And I actually got some sleep this am, and was a real struggle to get up to go to placement, I just don't know why I bothered.

    A nice soothing cuppa chamomile tea or a soothing soak in a hot bubble bath scented with lavender, soft music (enya or some other white music or gentle chamber music) Workd like a charm every time (of course so does a nice glass of wine too )

    NOW you're talking ! I'm with you and Gwenith on that one! Add the soft music, or "relaxation" CDs..(rain, river sounds, etc.) and you'll soon be adrift in sweet slumberland !

    Oh, I forgot about the relaxation music! I have a CD of a thunderstorm; starts out a little thunder, then a heavy rain w/thunder, then just a nice steady rain w/ occasional small bursts of thunder. It's wonderful!

    Thanks for all the responces, I just haven't had time to come back on here, still tired but now getting more sleep a night maybe 4 hours at the minute... which is an improvement.

    I tried music it doesn't work, I tried warm drinks, infact the only thing I haven't tried is alcohol,I actually went around to the shop and was going to buy a bottle of wine, when I realsied that everyone in the line in front of me was a nurse or a tsudent nurse, I live near the uni not he hospital, this was actually quite scary, as it was on a bad day for me, we still don't have our exam results as the external marker has gone on Bleeding holiday!! and I had a crap day on placement.

    To be honest If I fail these essays, I am not sure if I will stay on the course, right now my old job is looking tempting, and they have offered me a fulltime job with better benefits than I was on before.

    Stepping off of soap box, sorry for ranting, Anyhow I have come to the conlcusion that I will probably not sleep until I get the results so I am putting the time to good use, and getting some extra work done.

    Try something like Benadryl 25 mg, hot bath, soothing music, cool room. If you cannot sleep, do not stay in bed and toss and turn. Get up, watch a little TV. Then try to lay back down. Don't wait until late to go to bed. Try going about 9pm. Good luck.

    What Smilingblueyes said . There are few times in your life when you will abuse your body and push it to its limits like you do in nursing school.

    Change the bed sheets, take a hot shower and a couple of Tylenol. I sometimes take melatonin and it always works, but Im a little wary of interactions w/ other meds.
