TPN filters

  1. When giving TPN with fat, does your facility use a 5 micron filter? We are required to, but I have read some literature that says you should not because it filters out the fats.

We don't have all-in-one mixes. The TPN is in a bag, and the lipids are in a separate bottle. Lipids are not to be filtered, but TPN should be, is what I"ve always been taught. THat's the way it's always been done where I've worked.

We use 1.2 micron filters. I'm pretty sure the lipids are in the bag, but couldn't swear to it.

i believe we use .22 micron filters with our tpn. our tpns and lipids aren't mixed together. so if you have to hang lipids with the tpn...we have to use the port below the filter.
