Tired of this sore throat !

  1. Geeeeesh... it's going on 5 weeks now ! It'll go away for 2-3 days and I think "GREAT! Was just a stupid bug or something"... but noooooooo... comes right back again ! Had put off going to my NP 'cuz I usually shake these things pretty quickly.. and figured just as soon as I made the appt. it would be gone, so why waste the time and the money? Plus I HATE abx. and have to be "purt near dead" to agree to take them. But after all this time, it STILL keeps coming back, so last Tues., I gave in and made an appt. for Thurs.
Sure as dogdoo, when I went, it was GONE. Felt like a jerk. But she said she didn't have any idea what it might be, 'cuz it's not your "usual' type sore thraot. It's so wierd ! Not strep.. did a culture.. knew it wasn't anyway.
She thought perhaps related to sinus (which I never have sinus infections or allergies) and had me try some potent decongestants IF it came back. It did.. that Sat.
Throat kept me up 3 nights in a row..decongestants didn't touch it ! Neither did saltwater rinses.
Called her back and she put me on Zithromax, even though she thinks it may be viral. I do hope this works. Keep a constant lowgrade temp of about 99.8 or above, and the pain keeps moving around ! First one side, then the other.. below the ear, deep in my glands.. sometimes feels like tonsils, sometimes feels like parotid glands, other times the back of my tongue and oropharynx.. just crazy like! Not "scratchy" hurt, just HURT hurt.. hurts when I swallow, get knife-stab pains just below the ear, but why does one side clear up, then move to the other ? Then just the back of my throat, and then just deep inside?
The symptoms are STRANGE.. never had a sore throat like this, and never had anything I couldn't shake before. No congestion, didn't have a cold or URI.. nothing along those lines.

Arghhh ! I'm leaving for my week of fun in the sun in Tucson the end of the month, and I do NOT want this coming with me ! It was NOT invited !

OK... just needed to rant a little. Thanx !

I can kind of sympathise with you, Ive had this tickly, scratchy throat for about a week and its starting to get really annoying. Doesnt sound half as bad as yours though, hope it goes away soon for both of us.

I went to a ENT with mine. I did have several things"wrong" but the sore throat and ear pain was a eye opening diagnosis. It was caused from acid reflux. The soreness was more on the outside of my throat, I could grab it and it hurt, from the outside also. The doctor told me that at night, the acid flows up there and my throat would do a atomatic clamp down(the muscles around it) to stop the flow . The ear pain is a common site for referred pain. Humbles a nurse, to find this stuff out.:imbar

Hope ya get to feeling better soon, jnette:kiss

Interesting that you should say that, Cwazy !

Cuz my NP asked me about that.. reflux. But I have NEVER, and I do mean NEVER had reflux problems. Never have heartburn, nothing like that at all. Mine doesn't hurt on the outside at all, either. But my ears inside BURN and feel FULL, like they're going to explode ! And like they're on fire. But not an ear infection type of pain, either. Don't know.. just don't know... but it really hurts.

    Waaaaaaaaaaaaaahhh !!! I'm never sick. Don't LIKE sick !

Jnette I'm sure you thought of this, but just had to ask. Have you seen your dentist??

Thanx for all your thoughtful replies !
Yes, Browns, Regular dental checkups, cleanings, etc. No problems there.

I called my NP back and she put me on the 5 day tx. of Zithromax... my 4th day today, and as of yesterday no more sore throat. Now I'm just waiting to see what happens after my last one tomorrow. It HAS gone away for 2-3 days before, but then came right back, so I don't know if it's the abx. or the throat just playing its silly, annoying game again !
Time will telll, but for right now, I'm grateful for the break and for feeling "normal" again !

I was going to mention reflux too. I find that when I got bronchitis a terrible, hacking night time cough and pharyngitis would linger for 5-6 weeks.

When I was put on Zantac by a totally different doctor, the next winter when I had the bronchitis.... no cough and sore throat. It's been 5 years now since I have had that combination. So I'd say maybe try Zantac or one of the other H2 Blockers.

Well glad to hear the sore throat has given you a break. Hopefully it is gone for good! Will be looking forward to a praise report soon.

    jnette,
I went through this for six months last year. My sinus were bothering me when it started, but they quickly cleared up. For months and months, sore throat and ear pain. Had fluid in my ears..one ear infection toward the end.

Steroid shot finally cured me. I tried multiple abx (enough to kill a horse) and I'm like you, have to be half dead to take an abx. I DID feel half dead. I think I tried a steroid pack, if I remember right. Finally, I went back and begged for a shot of decadron or something similar. I got it and within a few weeks, I was completely well. Within a day or two, felt 100% better.

Good luck, it is miserable! Also, do you live in a high pollen area? I know that was one problem for me. I tried stuff like Flonase and decongestants, but they all dried me out worse and made the sore throat worse. When I left all decongestants off, I got throat relief.

    Thanx again, guys !

I'll see what happens here next week.. if it DOES come back (oh, please, no... ) I might have to give in and see an ENT doc. Just don't think it's reflux... have never had the first sign of any kind of reflux. Pollen has NEVER bothered me, either, and don't have allergies.. but I guess Ill have to consider all of the above if it DOES return ! Let's wait a week and see what gives ! (keeping fingers crossed!)

    Thanx again !
