The Question...LOVE...What IS love and WHY do we need or want it?

  1. well gang...i am on my way to bed and thought i'd share something from a movie i saw this weekend on the tube. the movie was called cool blue...starring woody harrelson and hank azara.

let me set the stage: woody and hank are in the bar at a table talking about love:

woody says: i don't think i'll ever find love.

hank says: the question aint if we'll love...but why we love????

sooooooo....my fellow comrades...i pose that question to you. why do we need love, want love, love period???

night-night cause my day is done until tomorrow! sweet dreams everyone! happy luvin'!!! :kiss

    Interesting thought cheerfuldoer.

What type of love are you talking about?

For me, love is a very powerful emotion. I haven't felt that overwhelming love toward someone that would make me want to spend the rest of my life with them, but on the otherhand----I have absolute unconditional love for my nephew.

    So....

I guess my answer would have to be that we need love in order to be complete (not a Jerry McGuire reference )

To me, love is wanting the very best for another person, enjoying time spent with them immensely, willing to share anything and everything with them, good and bad. It is also the feeling that you would "go the distance" for them, in defense of them, or their honor, if infringed upon. I also give a person I love my trust.

Of course, my relationship with my husband has a sexual component, too!

I think that we need love to enjoy relating to the human race, and because God saw that man was lonely, and created a companion for him. Even though we can function in quite an excellent manner, and even thrive, it is always sweeter when shared with another.

Subec...the kind of love I'm referring to is whatever any one person describes as LOVE, and how they choose to define that love in their life, as well as WHY they love in the first place. Everyone has their own idea of what love is and why we love...or choose not to love. I'm just interested in hearing about how others view and define love, and WHY we love in the first place. So, whatever you think love is, and whatever reasons you share about WHY we love, are all good food for thought.

Emotions are neither right nor wrong, but it is what we do with our emotions that can make or break us and those we choose to love...or not! :kiss

Thanks Jayna and Cathy for sharing your perspectives also!

    Why do we love?

    Hmmm....

I guess from a Biblical perspective, it's because we're made in His image, and He IS love.

I love because I have to. It drives everything I do personally, professionally and socially. Must be that french ancestry coursing through my veins -- that need for drama.
I love myself, I care for myself out of love, I treat and even spoil myself sometimes. I have been in love (romantically), this has evolved over time and has led itself to drive the social aspect of my life -- these too men are cherished friends.
At other times, love is the passion that drives me to push myself at work. My love of nursing drives me to learn more and more all the time, to master aspects of my practice that need work. When I care for my patients, I do so out of love of humanity. I do what I do out of the tenderness that I feel for them personally.

    That's love to me.

LOVE is just one more thing that can be used as weapon. Wonderful when it is there.
Hurts like a ***tch when it is torn from you.

sorry, it's been a rough weekend

    Hmmmmm......

Let me preface this by saying I hate Jack Nicholson and I hate Helen Hunt. And I also hate cheesy sappy romantic movies. But in "As Good As It Gets" when he says to her... "you make me want to be a better man."

That's what love is about to me. That was the only good part of that movie.

love is when you make a commitment to put another persons needs and well being above your own, its something you choose everyday, and theres no manual for it, no clear cut reason, the only way to explain what we all do everyday is our choice to love. to give of ourselves to benefit others. True love is not just being willing to lay down your life for another but to live it for another.

love is more good than bad... it makes you want to stick around, when you want to toss that certain someone out the window...
love is that 'hi hon, how was your day' followed by an open ear and maybe a hug... love is a warm body on a cold day to snuggle with... love is seeing that face (be it big, or small) and knowing that your life and their life is entirely dependant on each other....I suppose its a compromise for lots of things...but, with love, it all tends to work itself out in the end... but.... love, to me.... I suppose it is being patient enough to deal with me day after day...
    goddess, i'm a hopeless romantic.
