That was no ordinary insect

  1. Wednesday afternoon, I wake up after my usual sleep (noc shift) and find that I have been biten in my sleep. I have four bumps at the crown of my head, four bumps at the top of my head, above my forehead, one bump on my forehead and one over my right eye. all moving in a fairly straight line. I'm thinking, man I must taste REAL good.

Oh well, off to work I go Thursday noc. Those bites are really starting to get to me. They seemed to have enlarged and they hurt and itch like crazy. My right eye is starting to close from the weight of the bite on my eyebrow. I'm starting to run a fever. I'm starting to become very malaise............not a fun noc at work.

So, off work at 0730 and I make an appointment with my PCP. I'm thinking, "It must be something poisonous." They are now itching and hurting emmensely. The doctor comes in, takes one good look at my row of bites and makes the following diagnosis (((any guesses from you nurses out there?))):

    I have shingles.

I'm sorry. I had those back in February when I got sick with the flu, and they're miserable. I hope your doctor put you on some antiviral medication....it tends to shorten their course, and I didn't have any post-herpetic neuralgia, just some scarring where the lesions were.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

My nephew just had them in exactly same place. He is just about recovered now. Not an easy thing to go through. Best wishes for quick recovery.

I had them in October along that nerve from the side of your nose along your cheekbone under your eye. Yowsers! They hurt.

Goodness...I thought for sure you were going to say spider bites...I've had angry spiders leave bites in a row or cluster like that too...usually when I'm sleeping (yecchhh..and I HATE spiders with a passion...guess that's why they bite me...hehe)

Hope you feel all better soon...I know shingles is a bytch.

Yep - I guessed it - same thing happened to me, but I blamed it on flea bites and shampooed and flea dipped 6 very annoyed cats before finding out it was shingles!

I can relate........I thought the heating pad I was using to help my back pain had burned me, as my lower back was where my shingles started (they continued part way around my flank). :stone

Sorry you had to put your cats through that.....they hate baths only slightly less than they hate being startled, or going in the cat carrier, or getting shut out of the bathroom when you're in there. :chuckle

Add me to the list. Two weeks and counting. Valtrex, Prednisone, Motrin and finally Tylox and Neurontin. I never imagined I'd ever hurt like this. Mama swears I never had chickenpox but I guess this says I did. I'm praying I don't get PHN.

    edited to add:
My DD came down with Bell's Palsy 2 weeks to the day from my zoster outbreak. Same treatment and Rx. She's getting better fast.

I've never had shingles, but had a friend who did, she took L-Lysine tablets, this is an amino acid. I take these when I have a fever blister and they speed healing up. Hope you're feeling better now.
I had Bell's Palsy years ago, woke up, looked in the mirror and thought I'd had a stroke(droopy right side of my face).I took steroids and was completely better in about 3 weeks.
