Texas Democrats bolt again

  1. July 28, 2003

AUSTIN -- Eleven of 12 Democratic state senators abruptly left the state Capitol this afternoon and headed for Albuquerque after learning that Gov. Rick Perry was about to call a second special session on congressional redistricting.

The senator said the Democrats fled because they feared Perry would immediately call a second special session and Dewhurst would lock down the Senate chambers and prevent members from leaving.

I found this to be pretty amusing.

Gosh, what integrity. No wonder so many people admire politicians.

I can't believe they actually have to lock down the Senate chambers so people don't leave.

On the Lam, Texas Democrats Rough It
    By NICK MADIGAN
    New York Times

ALBUQUERQUE, July 31-When preparing for life on the legislative lam, it's always a good idea to pack extra underwear.

One senator forgot his belt. Another had to leave a newborn daughter. A third left his two dogs unfed until a girlfriend came to the rescue.

The Democrats escaped from Austin, a 641-mile trip

"We have a vacant seat at the table awaiting our colleagues' return," he said. "Millions of Texans go to work every day to a job that has tasks they do not like. Nevertheless, they show up for work. They do their job and Texans expect the same from their elected officials."

Such is the life of political fugitives.

I wonder if they are still getting paid while on the lam

This was and is a protest about this actions of the republicans, who continue to try and redraw the districts to suit their purposes! This same proposal has been brought up twice already in the past year, and been defeated! But the republicans just won't let it die! Just another example of how the republicans are trying to take over by HOOK OR CROOK! They even tried to make a deal out of the private plane they used to fly in! GEEZE!!"rolleyes:

Democrats have already wasted over $2 million taxpayer dollars by walking out
These Dems are wasting so much money, not to mention their integrity, why not just stay and oppose the redistricting? Stand up to those Republicans and not be cowards.

:chuckle Now, if NURSES who are dissatisfied with where they work would do the same thing, EYES would be opened to what's really going on! What better way to make a statement than to "Let your FEET do the walking" when the EYES and EARS aren't taking note of what is reality around them.

So why don't the republicans give it a rest already, and stop wasting time, and come up with an idea to help the American people, instead of just themselves..!

Steve Lange, 56, of Georgetown, Texas, was on vacation at the Marriott. He said the sight of his home state senators making a fuss in Albuquerque upset him.

"To me it's one of those things where we're wasting a lot of time on political things instead of doing what the people had voted them to do," he said. "You can't get anything done. If everybody in the government was doing this throughout the nation, we'd all be in a lot of trouble."

I agree with Mr. Lange ... we'd be in a lot of trouble if this were going on throughout the nation.

Maybe it's time people stop allowing the republicans to ram it's wishes down the throat of others. If you can't get something passed, then more on, and stop wasting the taxpayer's money on improving your chances of getting elected, and do something contructive with your time in office. Other than just trying to get elected again...
