Strength & Courage

  1. This poem is posted on my fridge...today, as I was cleaning, I read it once again. I was thinking about Reb and Jon and what they're facing..what the world is facing. This poem is just awesome, to me. I'm not 100% sure of the author, we found it in my 16yr old niece's car after she was killed in a MVA back in May of 2001. It was written in her handwriting, but we're not sure if she'd copied it or authored it. It appeared she was planning to give it to her mom for Mother's Day. It is a bit perceptual, imho, for a 16yr old...but she was a sharp kid. It's bone chilling, regardless, with it's words and the fact she'd either written it or found interest in it just a month prior to her death. Anyhoo, so as not to credit her for someone elses work..I just really don't know who authored it, but I love it.

    Strength & Courage
    (There is a difference)
    April 10, 2001

It takes strength to be firm.
It takes courage to be gentle.
It takes strength to stand guard.
It takes courage to let down your guard.
    It takes strength to conquer.
    It takes courage to surrender.

It takes strength to be certain.
It takes courage to have doubt.
It takes strength to fit in.
It takes courage to stand out.
It takes strength to feel a friend's pain.
It takes courage to feel your own pain.
It takes strength to hide feelings.
It takes courage to show them.
It takes strength to endure abuse.
It takes courage to stop it.
It takes strength to stand alone.
It takes courage to lean on another.
    It takes strength to love.
It takes courage to be loved.

    It takes strength to SURVIVE.
    It takes courage to LIVE.

    Mom,

I love you! And always will. No matter what.

    Love, Niki

omg...that is beautiful! No, I have never seen it before either. If that's how the note is written, it looks like she wrote it herself. Thanks so much for sharing!

Words are so inadequate sometimes, and this is one of those times.

Very moving, Tracy, thanks for posting. FYI, I found it on a number of websites via Google, but it is always listed as "author unknown."

    Star..
thanks for letting me know, I actually feel better with the knowledge that she probably did NOT author it as it, to me, would reflect someone who had experienced some of life's pains.
I guess my lazy butt could have searched myself, eh? I honestly thought about it..for a second
