SpongeBob is not gay!!!

  1. Just to set the record straight - drives me crazy when anyone is misquoted.

It is a long and detailed rebuttal so I'm not going to post the article but a link to it.

"Is this the kind of nonsense you want taught to your kids, especially if the nation's most popular cartoon characters are used to get across the concepts? I pray not!"

I see nothing wrong with the lessons being promoted by the "We are Family" organization. And yes, that is the kind of lessons I want kids to learn. Of course parents, should have a choice in the matter. Although, I didn't have any choice in growing up with such self-hatred and loathing as was preached........nevermind.

That a Christian organization such as Mr. Dobson's would object is a no brainer.

What he and some people find hard to grasp is that education about homosexuality and tolerance, is not the same thing as promoting it.

Homosexuality exists in this society and it more and more out there. Why pretend it doesn't exist just because you think it's vile.

I don't give a flying flip what his organization thinks about me and my family. Just don't hate and discriminate. If I'm not asking for your endorements, nor am I promoting my lifestyle............oh nevermind.

That's it right there. You hit the nail on the head, Tweety.

Thanks for the link, Steph..........when I first heard about Dr. Dobson's statements, my first thought, naturally, was of Jerry Falwell's paranoiac denunciation of a certain Teletubbie back in the late 1990s. This isn't even in the same ballpark. I appreciate the clarification.

I also agree with Tweety in the sense that teaching about homosexuality is NOT the same thing as promoting it.......whatever that means. Pretending it doesn't exist makes no sense to me.......by the same logic, pretending anything we don't like or understand would make it go away, and we've all seen far too much in life that contradicts THAT notion.

    Just my worth.

I posted this with some misgivings. I consider you all my friends, as much as we can be when we are just people who type on a bulletin board.

As a Christian though, to be misinterpreted is hurtful too. I'm not immune to pain. I really felt and said so many time in the thread titled:

    SPONGEBOB IS GAY!

. . that Dr. Dobson was being misinterpreted. Even if you disagree with someone's politics, don't twist their statements and post "SpongeBob is Gay" when that isn't remotely what someone said.

I heard Dr. Dobson interviewed on cable news and he seemed quite surprised that the media said he was saying that SB was gay.

I have to agree with this.

I don't share any great love for Dr. Dobson's works and his crusade as part of the 'Moral Majority'.

    But mis-representation is still mis-representation.

And yes, I agree with Tweety too

I agree that teaching is not promoting . .but I do question teaching 5 year olds about it.

As a parent, I want to be the one to teach my kids where babies come from and everything else that has to do with sex. I had a great time with the birds and bees talk with my 3 older kids. And I have ongoing conversations too. It isn't a one-time thing.

As a junior high school student I can see the point for teaching, with parental involvement.

The schools are not very welcoming to parents these days. Heck, they could drive my 15 year old daughter 3 hours away from campus without my knowledge to get an abortion . .that is scary.

Uh??? Not in this state, they couldn't. Kids can't even get on the school bus to go to the swimming pool at the Boys and Girls Club without a signed permission slip.

I live in California . . and they have to have permission to do everything else but abortion is different.

None of my business if my daughter has a surgical procedure.

Oh... I know that abortion is different. As ridiculous as this sounds, though, I am curious about the fact that they can drive a student anywhere without your permission. I also live in CA and a certain Mom forgot to sign a permission slip recently so her 12 year old son missed out on a field trip. He still hasn't really forgiven me...

I know - it seems like just the liability alone would keep them from doing it. But we had a schoolnurse here who did just that. Took girls off-campus for abortions without parental knowledge.

    Veering off-subject now.
