some kind of "fruit salad" recipe???

  1. ugh..I finally admitted to my family that I'm going to be off Thanksgiving (a coworker begged me to let her work)wasn't going to admit it so I wouldn't have to cook..and my SNL wants me to make some kinda of fruit salad that's got nuts, fruit, cool whip, etc. in it. She called it a "seven layer salad". I can't find a recipe for it and I refuse to call and ask her for it (i think this was all a setup ..hehe). Anyone know what she's talking about??

    Did I mention..I HATE COOKING!!!

Gee, when people ask you to bring something, they should say "a fruit salad" or a "casserole": not , "Leg of lamb with mint jelly" or a "7 layer fruit salad" which you never heard of! Sounds like my dear SNL!

I make a couple of things like that. I never knew it had a name though. I just call it pink stuff, or green stuff, or whatever color jello I add to it stuff.

There was a thread a long time ago about these types of dishes. I wrote down some of the recipes that were posted, I'll have to look around tomorrow and see if I can find them for you.

They seem more like summer dished to me though.

How rude of your SNL. Not just "would you mind bringing a dish?" No. Did she tell you what to get her for a gift too?

you should bring cranberry nut dessert... Now I gotta ask my g-ma who happens to be online(grandmas got this chain letter thing going on... it'd be cute, but she's a computer teacher!!!! )
... personally, I think its the only good use of coolwhip

you're gonna need wholeberry cranberry sauce... red jello, walnuts and cool whip... basically, you mush it all together (except the cool whip..) then top with the cool whip... chill, and serve...

or... you can bring a chutney.... Foodtv has a few... one with cranberrys and apples is so easy, and looks supercomplex i n a bowl...

hmm... or, to really blow them away....
go to the bakery, a nice italian one, and get some 7 layer cookies, and then say...'oops I thought this is what you meant!'
they might be pricy, but they;re really yummy!

    good luck

I have made a green one called Watergate salad, no idea why though.

    1 large tub cool whip
1 lg or 2 sm pckg pistachio pudding mix
    1/2 bag coconut
    1 lg can fruit cocktail
    1 med can mandarin oranges
1 med (reg) can of pineapple chunks
    1/2 bag marshmallows
    1/2 bag chopped peacns.

Drain the fruit, put in a large bowl, add dry pudding mix to it, and mix well. Add other ingrdients, mix well, and chill til serving.

It is all mixed up tho, not in layers, but I could live off this stuff if need be!

Mmmm hoolahan! My mom makes the same thing, only with walnuts. No coconut. With marachino cherries. So, I guess it's really not the same thing after all! Anyways, she calls her's President's Salad.

You could always just play dumb and call your SNL and ask her how she likes her 7 layer salad, since there are soooo many variations out there.

Oh that would look really pretty @ Christmas, the green w a lot of marichino cherries I will cut out the oranges, and do cherries. I think the cocnut is optional. So many people may be allergic to cocnut.

BTW it was walnuts originally, I changed it to pecans b/c they are yummier to me. I change all recipes from walnuts to pecans.

Very diplomatic, soooo many variations. But I do vote for the 7 layer cookies ala dumb like a fox!

This one is similar to Hoolio's, but fewer ingredients; people have been bringing it to potlucks since the Crimean War, at least...

    AMBROSIA

1 approx 16 oz can pineapple tidbits
1 approx 16 oz can mandarin oranges

dump in a LARGE (I suggest plastic) bowl with juice

thoroughly rinse a pkg of coconut to get all the sugar off it, and throw that in, too

    a bag of mini marshmallows

    1 pint of sour cream-no, it doesn't mater if it's lo/no fat

stir. cover. refrigrerate. Take to party.

To KEEP it cold (I'm big on that 'cuz I used to do infection control), freeze one of those blue ice thingys, place it in a ziplock, and stick it down into the center of the salad.

    Bon Appetite!

thanks guys! Hool, my hubby mentioned the
watergate this am, I think I'll use your recipe IF I decide to do the salad thingy that she "ordered". I'm highly considering taking something totally opposite.

    as for my SNL's rudeness...
umm, she's a damn yankee <ducks> so we just take her as is..

seriously, she's a real beech..never participates in family things, but suddenly this year, she calls and wants to do Thanksgiving at her house. We're all going along with it just because this is the bro (and her) that lost the kid in the MVA last year. We're hoping she's finally reaching out..recovering. She's still a beech, though.
