Snakes!!!

  1. That is the main thing I hate about Summer... Other than 100degree Arkansas heat....

I almost stepped on this snake in my yard, and of course I was walking barefooted... My friend yelled my name but it was too late, I hate just stepped over it, and put my foot down about 6inches from it...

Got a reality check one time, I was walking around my favorite spot, St. Joe's shrine, doing my native american thing of greating all the flora and fauna, and getting a gift I'd bought blessed by the Priest at the rectory (I know, paganism and catholicism shouldn't be able to mix but they do) Coming out of the rectory I noticed a snake summing itself in the crack of the sidewalk, mus have bee about 18 or 20 inches long, a beautiful copper color and designs, so here I am squating down to greet my brother snake, say my goodbyes and go to work. When I got to work I was all pumped from being with the birds and beasts, and my coworker just said, "you know, a baby copperhead can kill you just as easy as an adult." Couldn't believe how stupid I'd been then, particularly now, with the new series on Animal Planet calle Venom ER.

I am now thankful it was hot out that day, and that is probably why I didn't get bit, the snake was too warm to give a hoot.

What are you lot worried about??? Sorry but as an Aussie I just can't get excited about how venomous the American snakes are. Spent 10 years in the home of the Taipan and the Eastern Common Brown. Both those will take you down and out in about 20 minutes!! Taipans are BIG too - about 6 -7 foot long!!! And they are a "nervous" and aggressive snake - the beggars will actually chase you!!!

For hardy souls here is a list of camparative venom toxicity

As you can see the top 3 land snakes are all ours - aren't we just lucky??????

Now I got that little bit of boasting out of my system I can say that one of the sacriest times of my life was when I found a taipan inside the flat. Now snakes are a protected species here - it is illegal to kill but let me just say that it kept falling under a broom until it passed away from natural caused...........

The biggest snake that came into our yard from the woods nearby was about 4 feet and about an inch in diameter. I am not afraid of them per se but I don't touch them since I do not know if they are venomous or not. I always pick them up with a shovel and take them to the woods. With that being said I have no mercy on spiders. We had one in the phone box by our home that was the size of a dinner plate/legs out. Now I won't touch that!

I'd be outta there so fast.....
Can't stand snakes. Last Easter during our egg hunt, a garden snake curled right up next to one of the plastic eggs. When my daughter went to pick up the egg I saw it. I freaked, grabbed both kids and ran like crazy. My sister in law that it was so funny that she just had to go pick it up and show how harmless it was. Yeah right..
Luckily we don't get many snakes around here.Guess its just to cold.

I always liked the snake bite pts that brought the live snakes to the ER with them. In NC it was mostly copperheads like this one- usually much smaller. Amazing too was how many were bitten because they tryed to pick it up ---DUH. Rj

Last summer, we had the pleasure of 7 snake visits, 3 of them in my eldest daughters bedroom. All of them were eastern brown snakes, the longest being just under 6 ft.
As Gwenith said, they are protected here in australia, but so are my kids. Richard 7 - snakes 0.
