Singer Dan Fogelberg dies

  1. NEW YORK (Associated Press) -- Dan Fogelberg, the singer and songwriter whose hits "Leader of the Band" and "Same Old Lang Syne" helped define the soft-rock era, died Sunday at his home in Maine after battling prostate cancer. He was 56.

I was sorry to read this. I didn't know he was sick. I grew up enjoying his music. My younger sister sang "Longer" at my older sister's wedding. "Same Auld Lang Syne" is a beautiful tune with special poignance, now that I'm getting older.

I read this first thing this morning...so sad! I didn't know he had cancer; so young! I also loved his music, and Same Auld Lang Syne (?) makes me misty every time I hear it...I think we have all had that moment of running into an old flame and catching up on life and feeling a bittersweet moment as we say good-bye.

I am a big fan of his music and was very sorry to hear the news, but not shocked. I had heard that he was quite sick.

I recently bought a new car with a CD player instead of just a casetter player like my old car. I will have to look for some CD's of his music now. I will do that.

Oh wait! That wasn't me who wrote that word, it was in the newspaper article I clipped! LOL! What a flake I am! I do think the author spelled it wrong, though...

I was saddened by this news as well. His father, about whom he wrote "Leader of the Band" was a well-known, and well-respected band director in a town not too far from where I grew up. I was touched by that song, and by most of his music. He was a class act.

Oh, I came across wrong with the question mark...I wasn't sure if I had the correct name for the song. I mean, I AM a freak about spelling, but I wasn't trying to bust your chops!

Good grief............he was my husband's age.

I've always loved both of those songs. They mean a lot more now that I'm older.

"The leader of the band is tired,
and his eyes are growing old,
But his blood runs through my instrument
and his song is in my soul,
My life has been a poor attempt
    to imitate the man,
I'm just a living legacy to the leader of the band."

    God rest Dan Fogelberg.

My husband is 54. His Dad has prostate cancer - but the kind elderly men get and usually don't die from.
