Serafem...Info?

  1. Hey yall! Just went and got my yearly pap smear done...talked to doc about my mood swings, occasional depression, and EXTREME IRRITABILITY at certain times of the month...she sent me home with a rx for Serafem. Just wondered if any of yall have had any experiences with that..or know much about it. From what I've found out, it's comparable to Prozac. Oh well, long as it helps keep me sane I'm game!

    Sunshinerebel,

Serefem is the same med as prozac. It is used to reduce Pms sx.

We use it quite often in our practice,it seems to work well for a lot of women. We generally start it midcycle, its taken for about 2 weeks. A lot of women opt to take it daily.

I usually don't get a lot of call backs with side effects, seems to be well tolerated. Good luck........hope it eases your sx!

    Moonchild,

Do you know anything about Yasmin? I think it's supposed to help with all those symptoms isn't it?

    usnoozulose,

Yasmin is a estrogen/progestin oral contraceptive pill. It can help with the pms sx. The side effects would be the same as any other OC.

MyOB/GYN sent me home with the same rx. I didn't fill it. I don't want to take Prozac even short term. I worked with an LPN who was on Prozac. She either was too nucking futz for the Prozac or it just aggravated her condition. Either way, I didn't want to risk it. I prefer herbals. Blue and Black cohosh, red clover, wild yam, and dong quai work well for PMS symptoms. At least for me they do.

    Molly,

I have known a lot of women that get relief from the herbals. Also, aerobic exercise is great for PMS.Some women get relief from dietary changes, increased protien, decreased carbs. There are so many options for PMS.I guess women just have to do what they are comfortable with, really no right or wrong way to treat IMHO.

I took serafem. Had to stop. One of the listed side effects is decreased ability to concentrate and memory problems. For me, they were not kidding. After 3 days, I had to work really hard to remember simple things like my phone number. Just can't take that particular side effect when I am responsible for keeping up with my kids and my patients. My PMS symptoms are better when I exercise. I really hate to exercise, but I hate PMS even more.

Wow. Hope it doesn't happen to me. Already a little flaky at times already. I don't know, though. Hopefully it will be worth it. How long did it take for it to start working, though? This will be my third day on it, and I'm already feeling better. I know it's supposed to take a while, a few weeks or so, so maybe it's the placebo effect or something! Anyway, yall take care this week. Gonna be gone till next Thursday. Honeymoon in Myrtle Beach! Yay! Rehearsal is tonight, and I'm even nervous about that! If so inclined, please pray for me that I don't trip walking down the ailse or something even worse!:roll
