I used to work as a lounge musician on a cruise ship. As an American worker, I was a minority. . . ( highly paid "American Musician" employee, I might add!)

Made some very good friends with fellow cruise-ship members. . . musicians, entertainers, officers, regular crew-members (the highly underpaid work-horses of the cruise ship, I might add!).

It was not uncommon for non-American employees to actively seek "scam marriages" to obtain their green card. Back then. . . oh , 20 years ago! (Man!! Do I feel old! ). . . the going rate was around $5,000.00.

    Some succeeded.

This just goes to prove the point that there are A LOT more people trying to get into this country than there are trying to get

This has been going on for...well for a long time.
    5-10 grand isn't unusual.
usually around here they just stay married to one person. and usually just til the green card comes.
Some have actually found love and stayed together.

We had a big problem with "Phillipino" brides the women would correspond with an Aussie guy get married and come out to Australia - unfortunately the marriages were often awful for them. Many of the men were in thier late 70's early 80's looking for a carer - often the woman did get pregnant and ended up with a young family and an elderly husband often not in the best of health (yeah yeah! I can just see you all itching to comment on THIS little revelation:chuckle

They could not claim any social security for 5 years and if the marriage was abusive were virtually caught in that situation for far too long.

One of the more common problems with these marriages was that the women were often from poor backgrounds and so were small - under five foot in height. Good nutrition here and genetics meant BIG babies so a large percentage ended up having caesars.

The goverment cracked down more for the welfare of the Phillipino brides than any other reason.

I heard stories about filipinos marrying just to get out of the country. In fact my husband's cousin (we are all filipino) just married a guy in the Philippines for this very reason. Fortunately she got to know him better during her stay in the Philippines and is trying to make the marriage work.

On the flip side, there is a misconception that all filipinos who marry Americans (or those from other countries) only marry them to get out of the Philippines. Since I am a product from a filipino women/American guy marriage, I know it's not true. When I was 12 years old, a friend told me that's the reason my mom married my dad.

Didn't mean to suggest that that was the only reason for the phillipino/Australian marriages - I really was trying to point out teh real down side. An awful lot of women who thought that they were marrying a nice Australian man who owned his own house ended up in a remote mining town like "anarchy" living in a humpy with an 85 year old tattooed abusive alcoholic 'roo shooter unable to leave the marriage and escape.

    No offense taking here.

I know you weren't saying that's is the only reason all filipino women marry men from other countries, you were just pointing out an observation.

I just wanted to say that because some people really do think that.

Hey Gwenth, It does happen. There are some who marry for love but some who marry for green cards.

I have seen these, while working in the south East asia for the past 2 years mainly philippines and Vietnam and seen these things happened. Heard tales about it too from their very own people too.

Now that am in NZ, I have seen white men try to hook up with asian female, which they(white old guys) thought all asian female are easy targets for sex and marriage(carer). Well some narrow minded ended up with them while others don;t like the stereotyping.,It pisst the broad minded asia females. And the stigma goes around and around.

My hubby's cousin just sent for a Russian mail order it still goes on. What a strange arrangement these things are, eh?

A few years back a man in my area was caught after importing 3 Filipinas over a period of years, marrying them, insuring them heavily, then killing them off when he tired of them. They were such beautiful, petite little girls...such a tragedy.

In this town, I know of one situation of a Russian mail order. She was in her late thirty's with a teenaged daughter. He married her, and brought her to the states. Less than two years later, they are divorced and hate each other bitterly. This marriage was his second mail order bride...
