I suggest steering clear and if you itch...then scratch!

Yes the little beasts were in my home. My son had them x 2.
Itching betwee digits of hands, between toes. With evidence of tracking under the skin, symptoms were worse at night. I was fortunate not to be infested. The pamplet provided with the treatment provided other things to do. There were some things I could not wash ie pillows so I put them in a plastic bag x 1 month.
I think my son had a skin test a few skin cells were removed and placed on a black square of paper, and examined.
There are a variety of treatments The pharmacist was helpful.
Look at the caution info. with the lotion.
I cleaned my house top to bottom, and used a diluted bleach solution and wiped down his entire room. I went over board.
He was itchy for days but no tracking and the lesions healed and did not develop.
    Good luck!

we have a patient on isolation with scabies right now, too bad he is also totally confused/delerious so he makes a point of leaving his room and going all over the unit

frig I gotta stay away from this thread, as soon as I started reading it I started to scratch my itchy leg......

I itch just thinking about lice and scabies. I'm itching after reading this post!

Had a pt during one of my clinicals that had lice, very large buggies, so they had probably been there quite a while. She had been in the hosp for a few days. While I was telling my instructor and the nurse about my find, they both started itching their heads. I know a lot of the nurses on the unit, just to be safe, treated their hair.

Maybe you can get a treatment and use it just to be safe?

She was given the weekend off , as her doc told her that the medication would make her MORE contagious....for 48 hours. I don't know though....I am definatly steering clear!! I guess my paranoia will go away HOPE!!

I had them twice as a child. They are horrendous!!! My mom felt bad when she had made me wait 2 weeks to go to the doc because she thought I just had excema like she had as a kid!!!

I'm telling you, you'd know if you had them! The itching is intense! I remember lying in bed at night with a stiff bristled hair brush and scratching with it all night long!

We did the lotion to the entire family, cleaned carpets, all my stuffed animals in trashbags for a month, all bed linens washed in hot water, and the bed sprayed with lysol.

Then there was the time when I worked at a SNF and had a patient for weeks before we realized he had scabies. Every nurse that took care of him was treated, and he was put on isolation. I don't think any of the nurses were infected though.

I hope you don't get them! And I totally feel for you co-worker that has them! I wouldn't wish them on anyone.

Ditto. The last nursing home I worked in cycled scabies every two months or so. The DON and ADON were in denial. Some staff had scars from scratching and some took them home to their children. The residents were treated with some topical creme, showered 12 hours later and treated again. I couldn't wait to get outta there!
