Sammy Sosa and the Case of the Corked Bat

  1. So I heard yesterday that Sammy Sosa of the Cicago Cubs was ejected from a game (and now suspended) after a broken bat revealed that the bat had been "enhanced" with cork.

    Way to go Sammy.

Although I'm a big Cubs fan, to me Sammy is way overrated.

He claims there was a mix-up, that this bat is normally only used for exhibitions, home-run hitting contests, etc. But if he's really "all that" who needs the corked bat?

Again, way to go Sammy. Maybe this would explain his recent hitting slump?

I stand corrected, he was allowed to play pending a full investigation.

I wonder if this scandal will make him the Martha Stewart of baseball?

    Nothing surprises me anymore

People get suspended for inappropriate behavior and Sammy certainly looks kinda guilty right now. I don't think they believed that he actually grabbed the wrong bat.

The authorities have tested over 90 of his bats, and they are all clean. his explanation was that it was a bat he uses during pregame warmup, to give the fans a thrill...sounds like a pure mess up by whomever hands the guys the bats...

Let's give him a chance before judging him guilty of cheating & dishonesty. As Cactus said,
all of his bats were confiscated & sawed in half to see if any were corked or any of the dozen other ways batters can alter their bats.
None of his bats had been altered except the practice bat.

His batting is down because he was out -on the injured list- because of a subdural hematoma he suffered a couple of months ago, from a bad 100 mph pitch.

Anyway, that's what the sportswriters are attributing his
    lowered
batting average to. His eye/hand coordination is suffering.

I'm waiting for the investigation by the professionals and
the ruling by the baseball commissioner.

Wow, I heard they were x-rayed. Sawed in half, all of them? What's he gonna use at his next at bat I wonder?

I saw exerpts of the press conference he held before yesterday's game. He sounded genuinely sorry and humble. But let's face it, when your in a slump, and then you just come off of the DA list, then your busted using a corked bat...it just doesn't look good.

I, too, heard that the bats were x-rayed.

Not that I know much about anything to do with baseball, but I heard a discussion on this matter this morning. In that report they are now saying that the use of cork actually decreases the distance the ball travels.

Here's a link to the news report if anyones interested.

Makes me wonder if he deserves to have his homerun record, if he won it dishonestly.

I remember from playing ball for many years that once I found a bat that I liked, I hated to stray away from that one bat.

You become acustomed to the weight and the length of the bat.

This means that I would go out of my way to find the SAME bat each time up.

Maybe it is different in MLB. More money...more bats.

His public apology immediately after the incident makes him more suspicious to me now.

    But innocent until proven guilty...
