Safety Hint: New type of Theft

  1. This isn't one of those urban legends, this was on the news this morning here in Vegas.

The new trend in home burglaries is gaining access through your garage. How do they do this? Especially if, like me, you have an automatic garage door opener?

Popular in Vegas are the garage doors with the decorative windows at the top. If you're tall enough, you can peek into my garage through the window.

If you are a burglar, you drill a hole near the window closet to the pull release to your garage door. You snake a hooked hangar through that hole, catch it on the pull release, pull and ta -da! Your garage door can now be manually opened.

The police on the news this morning recommended several things:
    - cut off that little red handle on the end of your pull release. You can still pull the release with the heavy cord. (I did that immediately this morning)

    - Make sure you ALWAYS lock the inside door going out to your garage.

    - frost or darken your garage door windows

My garage isn't attached to my house, so they are welcome to get inside. But there's always the danger that a crazy man with a weapon could be in there waiting on them. We live in the country, way out in the country. It's so sad that someone spends all their time and talent trying to figure out how to steal your stuff.

Sounds like to me that anyone that is smart enough to do all that to get into your garage would just get a job and not have to spend all their time looking over their shoulder.

When there's a will there is a way.

I was dismayed to find out that my automatic garage door doesn't really lock. When the battery ran out I simply walked up to it and pulled it up. It took a little strength but up it came.

I remember you used to be able to open other people's garages with your opener. Is that still possible? I recall thinking it was so funny to drive around town and see which ones came up...

Oh Kristi... you MUST come see me in Toledo sometime!

A good friend of mine just had her car stolen from a Kroger's parking lot. The first thing the cops asked was if she had an automatic garage door opener in it. He personally drove her home an helped her deactivate it. Apparently this is a common thing.

Wow, I am finally cured of my jealousy of people who have attached garages. Our little "shed" is detached, and so narrow, we wouldn't dream of trying to put a car in and out of it, just the motorcycle!

I am having a hard time visualizing driving thru the neighborhood and seeing someone w an eletric drill putting holes into my neighbors' garage door. I am the kind of neighbor, that if I saw that, I'd be calling you, and if you didn't answer and your car wasn't home, I'd call the police. (Then again, I'm used to people's cars being in the driveway and not IN the "sheds"!)

    Crazy people!

I am with hoolahan I can't see all that work not being noticed, I would be on the phone calling the police. oh well I guess people may think it is a repair man working on something. What will people think of next? seems almost like work.deb

    Times are gettin' real bad...
I can remember not locking doors with the assumption that if someone was going to break in, they wouldn't bother with your door, they'd break a window anyway...
Does it matter either way anymore?

Oh great, something else to worry about, at least you can't see in my garage and with all the crap you can hardly walk in there. Hopefully with 2 dogs they will bark and scare someone away, but the truth is they would probably lick them and help them carry out my precious junk.
