Running With Scissors

  1. Has anyone else read this book?...It is un-freakin believable!! A true story, autobiography , of a young boy growing up in a dysfunctional family, mom gives him to her psychiatrist to raise and Doc's family makes the Munster's look like Ward and June Cleaver. Doc keeps an old electric shock therapy machine in the basement and the kids all play with it! This author recounts a deplorable childhood with a twisted humor that left me falling out of my chair laughing. l was amazed at the humor he still had intact in spite of his upbringing. And let me tell you, it takes a lot to drop my jaw to the floor....and l know he can't be making this stuff up, NOBODY has that kind of imagination, not even the Amytiville Horror ppl.

l gave the book to a friend of mine along with her Christmas present,(a box of Esther Price), figuring she will love it cause she's as warped as l am. Next nite she calls me, says "d@mn you, l was up till 7 this morning reading and eating chocolates."

This book was a hoot, even as sad as the situation was. The author relays his coming to terms with being gay that made me laugh till l cried. Anyone else read this book?

O.K., I'm gonna order it right now!
    WOW l.rae!

In the other thread I talked about ordering the 2 Alice Siebold books. It's the same introductory package that I'll be receiving THIS book in any day now!

I had never heard of it, but was intrigued by the cover and read up on it!

    Can't wait to read it!

YES!!!!! In fact I've only 20 or so pages left, so don't tell me anymore.

Wasn't it hysterial about how the shrink read his bowel movements as messages from God. I won't say any more. :chuckle

The most amazing thing is that it is a true story! I highly recommend it.

That sounds like a great read! I bought the Lovely Bones by Alice Seibold, and I haven't been able to finish it. Just not the great book of the year everyone proclaimed it to be....

Yes, I bought it at Christmas time. It was on the "Best Seller's List of 2002." I loved it.
Here's the review from the book:

From the first page of this memoir; one is drawn into Burroughs' weird and wacky world---at times laugh-out-loud funny and at others scream-out horrific.
His growing up (despite the dysfunctional family that reared him) makes ""The Osbournes"" seem like ""Father Knows Best.""
His mum's first line sums it up quite succinctly: "Damn it, something isn't right."
    Fasten your seat belts.

    The author is Augusten Burroughs
    Definitely worth a read.
  13. by Scavenger'sWife got me .... will look for it this weekend. Sounds right up my alley since I love a good weird-read. Did NOT buy/read "Lovely Bones" since I am highly skeptical of books SOOOooo highly praised. I have been "burned" in the past as I have never agrees with that kind of review. I love to read....made a New Years Resolution to NOT buy anymore books til I have read all the books I ALREADY own....and *that* lasted about three days!!!! lol
WIth a cover like this, who wouldn't feel compelled to read it?
