Ricin scare at Las Vegas hospital

  1. When I went in to work this morning there were police and news reporters outside the hospital. According to one of the nurse managers, a man injected himself with ricin and the hospital had to close their doors for anyone coming in or out for 7 hours last night. They said the man is in the ER, dying. They said because it was in the form of an injection, they could reopen the hospital. It must have been scarry for those stuck inside the hospital for 7 hours not knowing what was going on.

Nurse Nevada - when you report these things, which you've done in the past, please post a link with the information and the source.

If it is something that is not being reported, consider that you may be breaching confidentiality with your facility.

If you don't have anything to substantiate this, it comes across as being inflammatory.

Hmmm I have never heard of ricin and thought it was a typo. So I read this with interst as to find out more about it. I would like to know more about happpened also as it would be a concern if it happend where I worked.

After reading the acticle from the link I see Ricin is not contagious, so why the scare at the hospital?

So far I haven't found anything on this particular incident of Ricin poisoning. But the link to the article was very informative, I had never heard of this before.

well I just read through the article, and I am curious.... if castor oil contains this ricin, then why do the health food stored recommend it as a laxative or to stimulate labor? I took it when I was pregnant, and yes, it was very harsh, and I regretted it, but was I actually in danger?

Well if you were in danger from taking it once... my brothers and sisters, and I should would have been goners a long time ago. My mother gave us a tblsp. of hot castor oil every Saturday morning to flush our systems out!!! We had to drink hot tea with it!!!! To this day I do not drink tea at all! But I must say we rarely ever got sick.
