Questions for all Las Vegas Nurse

  1. I need information about the hospitals in Vegas. Me and my family are moving there within 2 years. I have been a card/neuro/trauma nurse for 6 years ,and ortho for 4 years prior to that. I teach cardiac classes also. I was wondering which hosp. have the best reputation for being good pt. advocates, good pt/nurse ratio's,good pay, etc... I need opinions please

    hi,
don't know too much about the hospitals but I went to a conference earlier this month which was great. You will have the opportunity to attend some good ones. I heard a lot of ambulances passing so would think the prospects of trauma would be good.

hi. even though our staffing has been cut back some over the 10 years i have been at umc i still hear it is the best overall. i feel i have great benefits and you could probably get a sign on bonus. after being here 10 years i accumulate 11.3 cal hours a pay period(every 2 weeks)which can be used for vacation or a day off here or there plus like 3. something hours for extended illness time. i get yearly bonus which increases every year. you have to work 8 years though for that to start. it was only a five year wait when i started. we have our union for help as needed. i wish i could give you the r.n. salary range but i'm an lpn and i'm not sure of their pay range. twenty something an hour. oh, and of course you have your health benefits. got to umc website and see if they have any info for you. j

Try UMC (University Medical Center), I hear it has a union and is the highest paid in Las Vegas and I guess its the most progressive hospitals here...give it a shot. Good luck.

oh , i forgot to tel you --we have a possible census of 34. for 34 pts. we have 8 staff- one charge(which is about to change) and 5 to 6 liscensed depending on the # of cnas. we are different than the main hospital in that we do our owm svn, x-ray transport, ekg, moving beds and lab. our charge nurse does the lab for now but they want to change that. they want us to give the charge pts. and change the mix. wre don't like the idea.

Thanks for responses. I am disappointed by ratio's and job reponsibilities. You said staffing was changing soon. For better or worse?
I guess I have been spoiled. as a charge nuse ,I take no pt's. We have an I.V. team, lab, transport dept.,ekg. team , ect...we also have a large resp. dept. I was told UMC does not pay SS., how is that ???

no. umc does not pay into social sec. but it pays into medicare. you will get your retirement from umc. you can also do deferred compensation where they take as much money as you choose(up to a limit)out before taxes and put it into an investment for you. you can choose high or low risk investments. as far as staffing they are planning to delete charge nurse positions. they want us to come up with some ideas that would work on our unit on how to set up assignments without a charge--maybe team leaders or something. the main hospital has all the luxuries you described of i.v. team, lab team, etc. we are in a separate building from the main hospital. but we still don't get any specialty pay. maybe you'd like the trauma unit here. i'm in inpatient rehab so i don't know their staffing ratios. maybe a unit manager position or something? j

I am not too interested in management, I think I would like to stay cardiac, maybe an ICU unit. At UMC, by not paying into ss, is the retirement better, and what about all the money I have already paid into SS??, DO I get it back??

i too have already paid into social security prior to starting at umc. you will still recieve what you are entitled to as well as your benefits from umc if i understand it correctly. if you get in 30 yrs. at umc you can retire at any age. other wise your benefits decrease some percentages based on how many years early you retire. plus, they frequently have buy outs if you've been here a long time they will buy 3 years for you so you can retire early. and you can buy years too. up to five. i'm thinking i'll buy 2 years and hope for them to buy the other three as 5 is the total that can be bought and if i bought 5 and then they had a buy out then i would have bought 3 yrs. for nothing. did that make sense???

Let me get this straight, your in rehab, have 6 nurses, plus cna's plus a sharge nurse for 34 patients? Damn i really gotta move we get 4 nurses (if were lucky) 2 aids (3 if were lucky) and NO charge nurse for 36 patients, and that acute patients post ops, admissions, transfers et al...

That sounds pretty interesting Janet,Desert Springs hosp. offered me a $8,000 sign on bonus, but I would rather work at a non-profit Hosp.
I have plenty of time to check all Hosp. out. If I understand you correctly, then you guys are Public employees. Are there any other perks?

well, i just found out today that the union is fighting admin. about deleting the charge nurse position. that is good for us being separate from the main hospital and all the dfferent things required on our unit that are not in the main hosp. can't thimk of much else to tell you. i don't know the pt/nurse ratios on other units. once your eib time gets to 500 it starts to go into your cal bamk giving you extra vacation time. and you can sell your cal time if you have a hardship. it takes a while though to start gaining alot of cal time per paycheck. i'm at the max now . i think you reach max at 8 yrs. starts out they dump 80 in on your 1st anniv. then it's up to you to let it build up. i keep mine between 3 and 4 hundred. you have to be below 320 on your anniv. dates or you will lose the excess. did you try looking up umc of southern nv. on the computer? j
