Question about boys and puberty

  1. I didn't know where to post this. My 12 1/2 yr old son has a 'breast bud'. I know I should have learned this in peds class, but to ANYONE who has any idea, is this normal? I know it's normal in girls, but boys? He has a little hard bump under only one nipple.
Any of you men remember if you had this happen? He even showed me and let me feel it, so he's worried. I told him it was due to puberty and completely normal.
    Hoping I'm right.

    Hi Kim

I would suggest that you make an appointment with your family doctor to have him/her examine the lump your son has just to make sure it's not something to be concerned about.

Boys and men both can develop BREAST cancer......get cyst there just like women, always get it checked out rather than assume it's just related to puberty. It could be.....and then may be totally something else.

I have heard (but don't really know for sure) that a small percent of prepubescent boys get these and the majority return to normal within a month. -Russell

Sometimes this is the start of gynecomastia, which is benign but looks like hell in the shower. Some boys actually have to have breast reduction surgery because all the other boys make so much fun of them they are psychlogically traumatized by it. I would get him and appt. with a peds guy and have it looked at. BTW, I would really appreciate it if you kept me posted on this. I worked in a peds adolescent unit a long time ago and saw quite a few.

    Thanks for your replies.

Yep, I think he's normal! Found this link and talked to another mom with a 12 yr old who's going through the exact same thing.
Although, I do think it's time for a physical. He hasn't had a good physical in awhile.

    Thanks again,

No problem Pappy! I'm going to call and schedule him for a physical tomorrow.
I can see a wee bit of a difference between the two nipples, but nothing major right now. Hopefully it will go away on it's own. I also read that this is more common in larger boys. Zach is only about 4'9" and weighs about 85lbs. He's not going to be a big man, and he HATES it. But his shoulders and chest are getting broader.....he's growing up on me.
