problem with my 'puter

  1. Something strange is going on with my computer.
    Just started today. It's VERY slow, and even after the status bar
    says the page is "done" the icons are still downloading in little
    dribs and drabs!!
    I've tried everything I can think of, although I am fairly new at
    using a computer.
    I tried: starting over, clearing my temporary files, clearing my
    history, re-inserting my RoadRunner cartridge (it's a cable service
    as opposed to a dial-up). Nothing is working!
    If I don't get this problem fixed it's going to take me forever to
    catch up on what I missed here while I was at work!!

    I would greatly appreciate any thoughts or ideas on how to
    restore my "high-speed internet" back to it's namesake!

    You might want to contact the Road Runner support team and detail them your problem. It would be good to furnish them the following information:

    * Type of Computer (Brand name, etc)
    * Processor Speed
    * Amount of Ram
    * Operating System (Windows - and there are several versions, Mac, Unix, etc.)
    * Hard disk drive(s)
    * Type of web browsing software (IE, Netscape) and how they're configured with your Road Runner, etc.

    The more information you can provide, the better.

    Good luck!

    You may also want to run a spyware detection program. Spyware can really slow your computer. I don't remember the site but a basic search for Ad-aware should lead you to one.

    Have you run a scan disc and defrag? Cleaned out all of your cookies?

    mine does that sometimes, and I will run scandisc and defrag and it helps.

    Oh, by the way, my mom got a virus on her computer that showed up after she started up, that she said made her computer (top of the line with DSL internet) go very very slow to the point of almost not running.

    You might want to run your virus software. And if you are like me, and don't have any right now, (actually, mine us just not updated) McAffee gives a free scan online.... it takes about half an hour, but it's free. Just go to their website!

    I have McAfee and it updates mine everytime I go online, I really like it.

    I got norton free with my puter three years ago, and the free updates were only for 2 years, so I haven't updated in a year.

    And yes, I am getting ready to buy some new software so that I am fully protected.

    Let us know what you find out!

    Thanks for all your replies everyone! After playing with it for
    an hour or so, the problem seems to have vanished. I don't
    know how, but it's better now!
    Thanks again.
    Wonderful advice (you guys are learning!)
