vancouver, british columbia (reuters) - british columbia's pig farmers are tired of their product being linked with what may be one of north america's worst serial killings.

robert pickton might have raised pigs at a farm where he allegedly killed 15 of more than 60 missing vancouver women, but that did not make him a "pig farmer," according to bc pork producers, an industry association.

"robert pickton never registered as a pig farmer with bc pork. in fact, he had more sheep on his property than he had pigs!" the group said in a statement released on monday, ahead of pickton's pre-trial hearings next week.

pickton, 53, was arrested in february and the murder charges are based on dna evidence collected at his ramshackle property in port coquitlam, near vancouver, which is still being searched for human remains.

police have never said if pigs were used to dispose of the bodies, but the pork producers complain that news reports are still giving their product a bad name.

"we, as pork producers... are proud to be producers of quality food that is safe to eat," the group said, asking reporters to avoid using "pig farmer" in their stories about the upcoming hearings.

pickton is believed to have sold most of the pigs he raised to private customers. he owned the farm with two siblings, and briefly ran a social club called piggy's palace" on a neighboring property.

the anti-meat group people for the ethical treatment of animals has attempted to capitalize on the publicity from the case by comparing the victims' plight to the treatment given farm animals.

however, peta dropped its advertising campaign, and plans to show a graphic video of animals being slaughtered outside pickton's court hearing, after receiving complaints from the missing women's relatives.

That makes me wonder if the pork chop I ate yesterday came from a pig who had eaten part of a victim killed by a dude who wasn't a pig farmer cause he had more SHEEP than pigs.

I'd go to the Piggy Palace. I go to RH&B even though they have a pig playing a guitar outside the restaurant. That makes me feel guilty for about half a second.

I've been to a Piggly Wiggly.

OMG! What kind of torture must have been going on in the stock room?

welll...those people he killed did not suffer near as much as those poor pigs...

Now whenever I think of pigs I think of that scene in Hannibal.

All snorting and big teeth and everything. I'm happy to eat them.

In fact, its my personal mission to eat as many pork products as I can, up to and including scrapple.

    now....what exactly IS scrapple?
    and would you eat tripe?

Scrapple, as my butcher grandfather explained to me once, is what you get when you put all the leftovers together. Its the only meat that's supposed to be gray before you cook it.

And no tripe for me, thanks. Just because I said I'll eat pork products doesn't mean I want to go on fear factor and start eating tripe and pig uteri and sh*t.

That's awesome, Kristy. I'm such a sick puppy, I love stuff like that. That's why I'm glued to Court TV whenever I'm home.

My only claim to fame is that I know someone who has a cabin in the UP that is next door to the cabin that belongs to Iggy Pop's parents.
