PCOS, anyone?

  1. in november, i was diagnosed with pcos (polycystic ovarian syndrome). i really don't have a "severe" case, but just enough to be a "pain in the b*tt". i have the acne (controlled with medication), abnormal hair growth (electrolysis is a wonderful thing! *lol*) and weight gain (should start glucophage on jan 14th, i was told this would help with this).

    am i the only one?

    That does sound unpleasant.

I don't know about glucophage helping with weight gain. I've met more than one person who has *gained* weight on glucophage. It causes diarrhea in a lot of people, so that might help with the weight problem. But the way it works is to not allow the liver to create so much glucose, so apparently it defaults to fat. At least in some of the diabetics I've met.

But I'm sure not the expert on that!!!!

Good luck! I hope it works great for you and that you feel better SOOOOOOONN!!!!

I was diagnosed with PCOS two years ago *when I was 23 years old* the option was to either stay on the pill or take clomid if i wanted to get pregnant right away

I chose to stay on the pill, however , I was not pleased with the fact that those were my only choices

thankfully the only aspect of PCOS that has affected me is the weight gain, in the stomach/mid section region, and of course the lack of ovulation/menstruation.

I plan on going to a specialist this month and ask to go on metformin as well as the weight thing/insulin tolerance is becoming a major issue for me.

I have done tons of research on this topic and would like to have more health care professionals knowledgeable in this area of womens health

I hope the metformin works for you and would enjoy hearing from you in the future

I was diagnosised with PCOS about 12 years ago when I was 21. I suffer from acne, weight gain, irregular or absent menstrual periods and hirutism (sp?). I also have not been able to become pregnant. I have been through an infertility work-up twice without success. (My husband and I did end up adopting three wonderful boys who are biological brothers). I was on Glucophage for awhile during the second infertility work-up. I went and seen an endocronologist a couple years of ago, but he wasn't much help for me. I know there is a national PCOS group that has a website with tons of info plus several other good websites about PCOS. Hope you can find what you need. If you need someone to talk to, feel free to email me a private message and I will respond. Here is one link for you: www.pcosupport.org. Good luck.

Wow - what a great site! I have been very ignorant of this syndrome.

Glad you enjoyed it! I am currently into exploring alternative treatments for PCOS such as herbs and such. I would like to try and improve some of the symptoms I have and try to regulate my menstrual periods. That would be a first for me! I think I have probably exhausted all the alternatives that "modern" medicine may have available for me to achieve some relief, so now I am looking into alternatives-esp herbs. I believe that PCOS is going to be a hot topic in the next decade as more information is found about this syndrome and its potential health dangers.

You are not alone. I was diagnosed with PCOS this past summer. Went through some blood work and a pelvic/transvaginal ultrasound. My OB said that my right ovary was fine but there were some small cysts on my left ovary. So he said that if I want to get pregnant he'll put me on Clomid. well that was 4 months ago and I have procrastinated about getting back to him. My brother is getting married in October of this year and I am gonna be a bridesmatron and dont wanna be 6 or 8 months pregnant. I haven't had a period since September 2001. I have acne too but just on the right side of my face in the chin'jaw area and also some mild hirsutism.

I know of several people that were put on glucophage and wound up getting pregnant. I am not sure yet what I am gonna do. we'll see
