Our Marine Corp Comedy Team in Action

  1. Losing hearts and minds
    Sunday, April 18, 2004 New Orleans Times-Picayune

The picture shows two boys and a Marine smiling and giving the thumbs-up sign -- like a dozen other heartwarming shots of soldiers with Iraqi children.

But the hand-lettered cardboard sign held up by one of the children makes it clear that something else is going on. It reads: "Lcpl. Boudreaux killed my Dad, th(en) he knocked up my sister!"

Lance Cpl. Ted Boudreaux, a reservist from Thibodaux, returned home from his deployment in Iraq last September; he is no longer on active duty. But the photograph of him continues to do damage as it's circulated on the Internet, drawing complaints from at least one Islamic organization.

The Marine Corps has investigated the matter, although it has yet to disclose its findings on the authenticity of the photo or its decision on whether to discipline Lance Cpl. Boudreaux.

His former commanding officer, Lt. Col. David Couvillon, has called the photo a stupid attempt at humor.

But the stunt wasn't just stupid, it was also mean-spirited. Lance Cpl. Boudreaux may have intended to degrade the Iraqi people, but in truth, he embarrassed himself, the Marine Corps and, unfortunately, his home state.

ok, NH, so what makes this comical??? I don't see where it's humorous. And what makes one think that the iraqi boy didn't simply add that caption at his discretion?? I just don't think we're getting the whole picture here.

And please, let's not bash the troops anymore, OK???? Just because PERHAPS one marine acted unethically, does NOT MEAN that all of our marines in Iraq, or any of the other members of the armed forces, acted unethically.

The marine and his buddies thought it was comical. That's why it was done. Oh yes, and that little Iraqi kid tricked them innocent US marines, did he?! Those Islamic devils! Osama is everywhere, and one can't be too careful!

What is also so comical, is that one marine corp dude can cut through so well all the lies and cynicism of his CIC and Head Staff, merely by copying them in his own crude manner. That's what's really so comical here, since you ask. From now on out, no photos can be sent back home, unless Rumsfield and Cheney both give personal approval. They need yet tighter control of info outflow from places like Fallujah and Baghdad.

Building Democracy in Iraq does have its lighter moments, thanks to the Marine Corp Comedy Team. NH

but is there PROOF anywhere that this marine in question was posing for this picure and giving the thumbs-up because he killed someone and impregnanted another?? Or could it simply be another ploy of an Iraqi citizen, child or adult, to breed anti-americanism in Iraq?? Do you not realize that children of the world are not as innocent as we seem to believe they all are here in the US?? Do you not have any friends or relatives who have served in Iraq who were nearly killed by Iraqi children???
I DO, for your information. ANd whether those children, or anyone else for that matter, commited those acts alone or with adult help, I don't know. But I choose to believe that there is more to this PICTURE and story than meets the eye.

AND IT IS STILL NOT FUNNY.

How bizarre. I can't imagine that someone would deliberately pose with a sign describing himself as a murderer and a rapist. If it were true, then I would suggest that young man needs serious psychiatric intervention pronto if that is his idea of a joke.

By the way, there is a counter photo to that one circulating the net. It purports to be the real one. Of course anyone with photoshop could have fixed it up to help the young man but that goes both ways. I am pretty sure #2 is a fake. I'm surprised the New Orleans Times-Picayune is reporting this sort of thing.

The sign was in English. So it was the US marine tricking the 2 Iraqi kids, not the other way around. Go to this link to see the photo and a commentary...

I don't think that an investigation is going to find this marine innocent of what is alleged that he did. It is way too keeping in character with the US troop mentality. NH

good post, Sharon. It pays to look into it a bit more....may want to check snopes.com soon about this one.....prolly urban legend. I hope we don't get into a habit of posting stories w/o really thinking thru if they are true or not. if it is true, I agree, this man needs psych intervention. Badly.

I don't think the Iraqi kids tricked anybody or had anything to do with this.
This is what I think happened. The original photo was taken and somehow made its way to the net or into the wrong hands. An American(more likely than not) doctored the photo and that one started making the rounds. Someone from the organization you just linked to picked up on it and now we have a full-blown "incident". Just my theory.

Thank you!!! That photo saying that a marine killed one man and impregnated a woman could easily have been forged. Anyone, American, Iraqi, anyone, could have changed the caption. I,too, find it hard to believe that two smiling children would pose for a photo with a U.S. Marine who had killed a kid's dad and impregnated his sister. If someone killed YOUR dad and knocked your sister up, would YOU pose with them and smile????

    NH,

what exactly is 'the US troop mentality'? tell me, i'd like to know what my 'mentality' was while i served my country. are you making the same kind of generalizations about US Marines (and the rest of the armed services) that you have decried elsewhere when they were made about anti-war or blame-America-first types? surely you aren't claiming that the mere act of serving in the military imbues some 'mentality' the way some on the right claim that protesters are all anti-American nuts or that those who argue for environmental protections are all eco-terrorists?

    NH,

What was your original intent in putting up this post? I am curious. Was it to discredit a member of the US Armed Forces, the entire Marine Corps, or was it to inflame and incite more bashing of the people attempting to get by day by day in Iraq?

I very seldom bother to read your frequent anti-war, anti-bush, anti-everything in Iraq posts. With this latest post though, you have reached a new low.

Perhaps someday you will be able to formulate a thought on your own and not just cut and paste articles you find that only have one theme. If it bashes the administration, the coalition, members of the armed services, or the US involvement in Iraq you act as though it is the gospel.

    Well, sometimes it isn't.

Reply or not, I really don't care. From this point forward anything you post will not be seen by me.
