OT- Anyone on Atkins experience this?

  1. I have been low carbing for about three years, with regular breaks. Whenever I break from the diet, and eat something high carb (even healthy carbs like multi-grain bread, or brown rice) my hands and forearms are swollen the next day. Sometimes VERY swollen.

Anyone else experience this, and does anyone know what could be causing this?

    Thanks.

You could actually have developed an allergy to some of the grains.
I actually eat brown rice on a daily basis, at least M-F, and have never had any probelms with it. Same as occ. whole grain bread. You are probably allergic to an ingredient....................

But this happens when I eat any high carb food, no matter what it is.

Does it happen when you eat natural fruit? Or vegetables?

Yes, it does. However, the higher carb the food is, the worse it is.
As soon as I go back to low carb eating, it goes away.

The Atkins Diet is a natural diuretic, so they say. This may have something to do with it?

Perhaps you have a problem tolerating certain types of sugars, or your body is going on strike because it prefers your new way fo eating.

I asked the registered dietitian at work, and she doesn't know. I thought that maybe my albumin levels drop when I go off of Atkins and eat more carbs, and less protein. But I really don't think that's it- no reason I'd have low albumin levels, and it couldn't drop that fast anyway. I have a doc appt next week, and I'll ask her. I doubt she'll know the reason either, though.

I find that when I drink sugared drinks (sodas, sweet tea), I retain water--which I notice most in extremities.

I don't find this with lower glycemic sources--or at least haven't noticed it.

I'm looking forward to your f/u after your appt. I just avoid sugary drinks now, but my curiosity continues, and I think my little phenomenon is related to yours.
