Oprah's new School in South Africa.

  1. Sometimes I like Oprah... Sometimes the celebrity nonsense drives me batty...

Still, I have to give her her 'props' for the new school is South Africa.

Educate a woman and you educate a nation!

I think it's wonderful. It's been shown that when a country's women become educated, the standard of living rises. This can only help them and I'm really happy about it.

I think it is wonderful, too. I pray that each girl attending that school for years to come will graduate successfully, and give back to their own country which is in great need.

Some people are upset that Oprah didn't build a school like that one in America. While it, too, is a good idea...I think Africa needs it more. Our own government needs to take educating our children more seriously. We have a lot more advantages in our country than those children do in third world countries, and shouldn't envy anyone who goes there to make a positive difference in those children's lives.

I think it's a wonderful opportunity for the girls in South Africa. I am so glad that we have a citizen here in the US who can afford to build such a facility (campus, really) to educate and therefore empower these future women.

On a morning radio show this AM, they had a call-in about this same subject. The topic was about Oprah's remarks she made about WHY she didn't do a project like this in the inner city of Chicago. Apparently, when asked why she didn't do this in Chicago or anycity, USA, she said when she visits the inner city schools and asks the kids what they want, they answer sneakers or iPods, or other materialistic things. That bothers her so much that she decided to do this in Africa, where the requests are uniforms or books.

    Food for thought.

My take on why the kids ask for such different things is because that's what the kids know! The kids in South Africa are unlikely to have even heard of iPods, much less covet one. Different story here in the USA.

Still though, great project, great need.

I look at the world as if we were all the same and there were no countries. So helping in Africa is helping mankind. It's helping people. And it should be left at that. I catch alot of flack for sponsoring a child in Kenya. A person is a person no matter what country they come from. I look at someone I don't see white, black, asian, etc. We are all people.

I don't watch Oprah but her humanitarism is to be commended. "To whom much is given, much is expected." I think Oprah has lived up to that quote.
