opinions re: Saturn cars?

  1. We are planning on buying a new car. We are considering a Saturn. I was wondering if any of you have had one or knows someone who has one. Was/ is it good or bad? What did you like or dislike about it? Was/ did you think about the customer service? Any opinions would be appreciated. Thanks, Kimberly

    I bought a Saturn SL1 1995 - Mocha colored

I love my Saturn - it is the best car that I have ever owned.

I wish that they would bring back some of the old colors - there was a pale pink silver that was to die for that they discontinued.

I hope in a few years to get a Vue (SUV) but hope that they get a little bigger first.

    I looooooove my Saturn!!!!!!

I would check the consumer reports saftey reports before I bought ANY car from ANY car manufacturer. But then I am an ER nurse, so the saftey issue is one that hits home with be big time.

I own a used 1993 Saturn. Sorry, don't remember the make. It has over 139,000 miles. Still running strong!

    I'm happy with our Saturn!

I have a 1998 SL2 and LOVE it. My parents bought one after we got ours and they LOVE theirs. They have over 100,000 miles on it (already!), and it's still running perfectly, gets almost 40mpg on highway.

    Excellent car.

I have a 1998 SL4. I bought it brand new. It has 96K miles on it. It still runs really well, and I have never been "stuck" with it broken down or anything. Also, mine has traction control and is excellent in the snow.

However, I am less than happy with a few things:

    1. The dealer. I am sure many dealers are great, but mine sucked! Once they sold me the car, they had zero interest in helping.
    2. The car does not have much power and hesitates frequently. I have heard that this is less of a problem with manual transmissions. Mine is an automatic.
    3. The engine makes a lot of noise, and frequently the car vibrates, especially in the cold.

Other than that, I really can't complain.

just this past weekend, a couple of my family members were discussing the pros and cons of a saturn. three of us own them...i have a 99 sc2 (third door). the best thing about that car is the 3rd door. i don't know what i would do without it. the other family members said that they were very satisfied with theirs.
whenever i take it in for an oil change, they check for anything else that might be broken/wrong. have found a couple of things and fixed them. i don't know if i will continue to go to them for my oil changes now that my warranty is up.
i have to agree with grace on her points 2 and 3. good luck with your purchase, whatever it may be!!!

I just wanted to let you all know that we bought a 2002 Saturn SL1 this weekend. It is cranberry in color and I love it. We even got 0% financing and interest. Can't hardly beat that, huh? We also got the 6 year, 75,000 mile warranty. I just wanted to thank you all for your input. My husband will be driving it to work on Tuesday to show it off to the people he works with and then it is my car! Bye for now, Kimberly

    Good for you Kats!

You wont need that warranty though. I own a 2001 Saturn and a 92 Saturn. My 92 has 235,000 miles on it and all I have done is change the battery and brakes and belts. This car has survived 10 nasty New England winters and is driven daily. Best car around!

We have a Saturn station-wagon. I wish I'd gotten the larger engine!! When it was our only car, I hated it, but now I don't HAVE to drive/ride in it, it's perfectly okay.

When we took it in for its 30,000 mile checkup, they found something badly wrong with the transmission (thank God I'd mentioned that it sometimes made a "thunk" when you shifted into reverse) and they had to keep it for well over a week. I also had the extended warrantee, though, and I got a rental car.

It's basically my daughter's car now, and she and her friends enjoy it - she says it's more of a challenge to drive than my other car.

    Love

Sorry to be a downer, but I hated my Saturn SL. It constantly had problems
and to top it off the service was horrid.
Once I had my tires rotated, and the next day I noticed a clicking noise called the dealer and they said, nothing to worry about, and when I was then on the Interstate my tire absoloutely CAME FLYING OFF!!!! Very dangerous for myself and the other drivers. The dealership where I was (on the Interstate) said that the tire had never actually been bolted down. So, when they call the dealership my hometown dealership says that I must have "messed with the tires" Like I know how to mess with tires...:chuckle Luckily the other dealer called the president of the company because he was concerned about the whole thing-

Well, I spoke to the president of Saturn and there is now a new service crew in my hometown, But I traded the sucker in for a nice Mazda- it always runs and I get superb service. So I guess I could say Saturn is very responsive when a could have been fatal accident happens and you complain to the President of the company, but other than that, I think they absoloutely stink.

    Other info:

! I didn't get a lot of power on Hills, despite having a 5 speed stick.
    2. the car still hesitated a lot.
    3. It had frequent electrical problems.- turn signals would go on erratically or not at all.radio ever really worked right. often stalled as I turned it on.
    4. It was no good for long trips.
    5. The car is almost entirly constructed out of plexiglass- I found that out when I crashed because the tire fell off. so as far as safety, it isn't up there, but frankly, I think it ranks similarly to others in that class.

This is my second Mazda- the first was so small, it had well over 250 thou miles on it and kept going marvelously. The second is nearing 200K now and without any problems (well, I wore out the clutch.) and both were Used prior to me. I guess there is nothing wrong with Saturn perse, but the service has caused me to continually tell people how much I despise the company.

Bought a new Saturn SL a few years back, thought it was great until

    1. constant electrical problems- jerky starts, stalls, turn signals would go on at their own accord.
    2. No power on Hills-or to accelerate and I had a manual transmission
    3. the service was terrible.

I had the car serviced- tires rotated: The next day I notice a clicking noise and call the dealer. He tells me not to worry and that my car will be fine, and he will not check it. I take a 500 mile trip that day, midway, on the interstate, the tire simply falls off. My car wrecks, I discover that my Saturn is almost entirely plexiglass. I also discover that the tire was never bolted on.

You bet I got a sweet deal on a trade. bought a Mazda and have never reqretted it. You can't convince me otherwise I think a Hundai would be a better choice over the Saturn.
