Okay...Time to Fess Up!

  1. Is there a secret you've been hiding? Something you're dying to get off your chest? A fact just pressing on your brain? Or maybe just something that's no big deal but nobody knows it? (That's me!) Spill it here...we're all ears. Ok...I'll go first...

My real first name is Joke' (common girls name in Holland). My father spoke English when we came here but my mother didn't. My name as they spoke it was Yoka'. When my parents went to enroll me in elementary school they were like um...Joke? No, you can't use that name. That name would cause alot of problems. My parents were perplexed, Joke' was a very normal name to them. So they suggested I go by my middle name, which is, Dirkje (pronouced Dickie in Dutch) Um No, you can't use that name either (1960's). Both of my Grandmothers middle name was Johanna so I became Johanna. When I got my American citizenship it was officially changed to Johanna. When I got to middle school I dropped the "h" myself. When I got married I changed my middle name to my maiden name.

I am so glad they picked my Grandmothers' middle name because the other choices were Bertha and Wilhelmina. Can you imagine???

My older brothers name is Leonardus. He goes by Leo. My younger brother was born here and he's just plain ole Bobby.

    Some of my secrets:
I tune my son out when he is whining sometimes.
I eat Oreo ice cream after my family has gone to bed at night. That way I don't have to share, and I'm not even sure they know I do it.
Years ago I called in sick to work because it was New Years Eve and I wanted to spend it with my fiance who is now my dh. (yep, I felt guilty later on.)
    I Google-Earthed Graceland today.

I guess none of those are earth-shattering. But it still feels good to confess.

I'm OCD about my Adidas Sambas. They are my babies. I have walked into work when it was raining with plastic bags over them so they wouldn't get wet. (I also made sure I had the desk the night, so I would get them scuffed up). I have shoe horns for them and I polish and weather protect them at least once a month. I also only wear black socks when I wear them because I don't want any white fuzzies on the black interior. Funny thing is, I'm more of the type of person who puts immaterial things ahead of everything else, but I guess they are my guilty pleasure... I dunno.

Oh... and I don't floss on a regular basis.

    Baaaaaaaahahahaha !!!

    I LOVE this thread !!!

But if you think you're getting any of MY little secrets, think AGAIN !

But keep on fessing up, folks... I'm thoroughly enjoying this read! :chuckle

Hey Joke...erm, Joanna................. Wilhemina still beats WINIFRED (Winnie) which is my sister's middle name!

And when I was confirmed I so wanted my mother's mother's name as my confirmation name.. Theresia.
But Mutti gave me the "look" and I fell for the guilt trip (hey, I was 12 years old, gimme a break!) and reluctantly agreed to take HER name instead... HILDEGARD. :stone :stone :stone

My mom wanted to name me Maud Ellen. You have to be quite beautiful to carry off that name . . .there was a very beautiful model named Maud that I remember from the late 80's/early 90's.

However, she named me after a young girl who was kidnapped, raped and murdered in our area when she was pregnant.

When I found that out, it made me sick. I was just a preteen.

On a lighter note . . ... .I've been known to eat an entire carton of Breyer's Chocolate Mint Chip ice cream after the kids were in bed.

I also made cookie dough when I was preggers just to eat the dough and not make cookies.

I had a great aunt named Louise Wilhelmina, after the kaiser, aka Tante Loisa or Aunt Weezie.

    I adored her.

My mother's father was Jewish by birth but raised Dutch Reformed. I think my great grandfather got here from Germany and said, "You mean here, they don't write it down? That big white church there. You see it? That's what we are!" There was a lot of secrecy about it, and lies. My mother is seriously conflicted. On the one hand she is proud of - and defensive about - being a WASP, or white Anglo-Saxon Protestant, but give her a few drinks and she'll tell my husband and all of his relatives how much she adores the Jews (which DH is, nominally), and that her father was a Jew. Sober, she says he was a deacon.

I think everyone here knows my deepest secrets already.

My parents still think I'm with my ex. We've been broken up for weeks now. He still calls my mom daily to chat but he hasn't told her either. He's her last chance at a sil.

I will go 3 days without eating a thing. Then one day is spent pigging out. I've always done this. Definitely not healthy.

You know what, Dutchgirl? If I posted my most deeply held secret, it would sound like it belongs on the lie thread! But there, of course, I'd say it was about someone else!

I remember my mother telling me that her & my dad wanted two children...the traditional boy & girl that most folks want. They wanted the girl to have a name with my mom's initials & the boy to have my father's initials. My sister was born first so they got their girl with mom's initials...then I came along! What a mess! For one thing I was 2 months early & I also was not the hoped for "James Wesley"! My mom told me it threw them for a loop because they hadn't even thought of a girls name...I was supposed to be a boy & that was all there was to it! I was 3 days old before I had a name because it took my mother that long to think of something, so I got stuck with something out of the blue, the spelling of my first name isn't even traditional & my initials (using my maiden name) are D. D. D. I learned all this when I asked my mom why she chose my name because it's so different from anybody in my family!
