Oh My Aching Sinuses!!

  1. HELP! I've got to fly tomorrow night (out to scatter my Dad's ashes) and wouldn't you know that while working last night I started to come down with a nasty head cold! I need help; Sudafed and Zinc lozenges , honey-lemon tea, Vitamin C, and Tylenol don't seem to be helping today. I have problems with ear aches normally when I fly!

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What works best for me is "Alka-Seltzer Plus" Cold and cough formula or Sinus formula. The "fizzy" kind seems to work better for me than the "Liquicaps".

When my sinuses act up, the only thing that clears them up is an antibiotic. That's how bad they can get in a hurry. I feel for ya, Jenny P. :kiss

Perhaps you can call your family physician for a Rx before you board that plane. ((((((hugs))))) and prayers. Have a safe trip! :kiss

Can you get your hands on some Zyrtec? Benadryl and Ibuprofen might help, and saline nasal flushes.

I've never been stressed in my life that I didn't come down
    with a head cold.

Those "bugs" take the upper hand when we're stressed.

Bless you for what you are doing for your dad...fulfilling final wishes..... what could be more gratifying and loving?

I agree you may need an antibiotic. With all the pollen flying around, it's easy to pass off sinus symptoms as allergies when there may be a bit more going on. Sinus infections linger and feel rotten.

You definitely do not want to fly with stuffed up sinuses.

This stuffed up sinus deal is real familiar territory to me.

Helpful hints- sudafed is great stuff, but you "drain out" better if you also take it with some guiafenessin ( plain robitussin ) and drink lots and lots of water. Hot liquids help too, tea, chicken broth..

Hey why not throw in an antihistamine if you suspect allergies are part of the problem

The old hot, moist packs to the forehead and face feel good too.

I hope you feel better. I hope your trip brings you comfort and peace. Sorry about the loss of your dad.

Thank you all for your input. I'm very allergic to aspirin and NSAIDS; and don't know if part of this is allergies to pollen or not -- I seem to be sprouting new allergies every year. Benedryl puts me to sleep, but I'll try it tonight with the robitussin. I've been pushing fluids all day and last night. I was supposed to work tonight but called in sick-- just got called by work because someone forgot to write my ill call down!!! NO, I'm not going to work (just a few words out of my mouth and the AHN said not to worry about it- he knew how I felt last night).

Thanks for the kind wishes too; there was unfinished business between my Dad and me; I didn't think it bothered me, but am finding it does now.

Good night; and thanks again for your help.

    Above good suggestions.

Have found the Humibid LA (12 hr pill form of guiafenessin) really helps along with decongestant, Hot Tea, chichken noodle soup; Steam in BR before trip. Something to chew on asent/descent and saline nasal spray. Long term flonase stopped working 9alcohol based) ENT switched me to NasacortAQ--water based with better relief.

    Have a safe trip!
