Off topic - roaches?

  1. Hi all! I hope this is okay to post here, because it's not nursing related...but does anyone know anything about roaches? I live in an apartment (have been here over a year), and over the past month, we've been finding some kind of roaches in here. It is grossing me out beyond belief because we work so hard to keep this place neat, and then there are these nasty bugs in here! We're going to be moving into a house, and I want to make darn sure that we don't take any of these nasty bugs with us when we move. Anybody know anything???

Mods - if it's not cool to post this here, just delete it. Thanks

thankfully i've never had this problem.
do you live in a city?
i know roaches are common there.
    and they are highly transportable...
    and breed like crazy.
you could have even picked one up at work and unknowingly, carried it home.
perhaps it's time for an exterminator?

    best of everything.

If you can, get an exterminator in. Talk to your neighbors and see if they're having problems, which they probably are, and see if several of you can go to management to get an exterminator out.

Pack outside. I know it's a PIA, but there you'll be able to shake everything out. You do not want those buggers coming to stay at your new house. Don't bring your boxes inside. Leave them in the car, truck, wherever. Those boxes spend a night in your apt and they're going to your new house.

Try some spray in the meantime. I've heard it works, just not as well if a pro came.

We had that problem years ago when we lived in an apartment. We were told that whenever anyone moved out they would move on to the next inhabited apartment so everytime someone next to us moved we got invaded. We got some sort of bait that they eat and carry back to the nest with them, and they share it and then they all die. It worked well. We found that exterminators seemed to exacerbate the roach problem and their stinky stuff brought all the other bugs out as well.

For everything you should know about roaches, and how to get rid of them, such as they can hold their breath for 40 mintues underwater, they can live for weeks without food but only a day without water. Their blood runs white...

I've had roaches before...I used some sort of foam insecticide in areas where I thought they bred, and those roach baits that DutchGirl mentioned, the ones that inhibit breeding. That seemed to work.

As for the roaches, if you are in an apartment the apartment manager needs to be informed and it would be there responsibility to pay for the exterminator. Thats always how its worked with my 2 apartments. We had bug problems, they had to take care of it.

Good luck with getting your new place soon, and hopefully no bugs!

Boric acid powder where they crawl.
You can put it inside cupboards and cabinets and around the sink to keep dogs and toddlers from reaching it.
    It works.

My uncle in Oklahoma, who was a pest control professional, told me this and we have had no more roaches for >30 years.

Hi ya there Meghan! Now here's a cute little animal everyone should love...

Bethy, Boric Acid is right next to the band-aids at Wally World and costs about $2.00

I grew up in Florida and I can remember getting roaches you could slap a saddle on and ride to work. LOL Then, the Orkin man to the rescue. The onlyl pest problems I've had out on my own is from our ten years in Arizona. We had a fight with some scorpions that didn't want to leave and one year the black widow spiders wanted to hang in our garage. The spiders were easy to get rid of.....the scorpions took some tenacity. :angryfire
