Nursing While Pregnant?

  1. Hello everyone!
I wanted to hear from those of you that are or have worked as a nurse while pregnant. I am considering excepting a position as a Clinical Technician at an area hospital. At first I was all set and ready to take on my new task at the hospital and then I discovered that I was 2 months pregnant. I am now a little apprehensive about the position because I don't know what to expect being pregnant and handling all the demands of nursing not to mention already being a mom and wife. I currently have an administrative position that I truly despise, I sit at a front desk all day long and suffer from terrible edema in my ankles for the immobility. When I'm off work i have absolutely zero swelling. This is not my first baby it's actually number five . My oldest is fifteen and the youngest just turned four. I was actually getting ready to schedule a tubal next month after the holidays because I really didn't want anymore children. Guess a little to late Anyway I would appreciate your suggestions on how you handled shift rotations and all. I will be working 7am-7pn shifts and sometimes vice versa. Also I noticed the hospital offers short term disability could that be used during my maternity leave? Thanks for your help and sorry it's so long.

I was pregnant with my daughter and worked in the ER. I didn't have any problems but you sure do tire quicker. I worked 8 hr shifts because back then we didn't do 12's. (my daughter is almost 18 so it was a while ago).
If you have an uneventful pregnancy there shouldn't be a problem, just be sure to get plenty of rest and don't work too many 12's in a row.
I'm not exactly sure what you do as a clinical technician.
As far as short term disablility I don't know because I quit when my daughter was born and went back in 2 years after my son was born.
Most people I know just took a 6-12 week leave of absence depending on what they could afford and how much sick time they had.
Hope that helps. Good luck and with five kids God Bless you!!!!
