Nurses Making Fun Of Local Alcoholic?

  1. Saint Mary's Regional Medical Center is looking into claims that some of its nurses created a holiday party flier that pokes fun at a local homeless man suffering from alcoholism.

Actually, that's in incredibly bad taste and it cracked me up.

It should never have been distributed, nor have gone beyond its exhausted hysterically silly middle-of-the-night creation.

Sick beyond belief! Hope they made the most of their five mins of laughter...ridiculing this man. Shame on them.

That is sooo sad. I worked at St. Mary's for many years and got to know alot of good nurses there who would never dream of doing something like this.

Good grief!! They even had ornaments with his picture on them?!

I DON'T like alcoholics much, but to have a party making FUN of them sickens me. Why don't they just hang a sign on their chests that says SUE ME?

Lighten up everyone! Am I the only one that found this hilariously offensive?

Every hospital has that "one" pain in the butt druggie/alcoholic that everyone just kind of laughs at b/c the situation has to have something to find humor in or the staff will go nuts. I cant believe they put his name and pic on the flyers...that was dumb. But I think the rest of it would have been harmless if they left those 2 things off of the flyers and the nurses should NOT be fired...just told to use some common sense and judgement next time.

...but who knows? Maybe Leonard had his feelings hurt b/c he wasnt invited and thats what all the fuss is about? Just Smile People!!!!!

What I thought was interesting is that a Reno Gazette-Journal staff member who does a local crime blog who posts Leonard's mugshot upon each arrest and makes bets on when he'll reach arrest 100 is the person who brought this to light.

Her blog about the flyer is here:

This is a catch 22. All the bleeding hearts out there want to blame everyone but the offender here. "Poor guy the system has failed him." You can't force sobriety on him and he doesn't want to be sober. This is not the fault of the police, the EMS, or the hospital.
If I had cancer and refused treatment and died a long lingering death that would be my choice. Would you blame the police???? This man has alchoholism, he refuses treatment.
The police can only arrest him for violating the law, the ems can only take him to the hospital and the staff there can only treat him for the problems to which he consents to treament.
So the reporter is taking bets on when his 100th arrest will occur, posts his picture and calls him the "Local inebriate celebrity." on a public website. These nurses made a flier to been seen by a few and he is screaming inappropriate?!?!?!
Having worked in the ER for a long time and knowing persons just like this on a daily basis I find the humor in the flier. Is it less appropriate than some of the other dark humor that we enjoy? Maybe since his pic was on it, but I bet they got the pic from the above reportrs blog, I bet they didn't snap a photo of him in the ER.

substance abuse [food, alcohol, drugs, smoking] is not the same as cancer or other diseases even those that are linked to abuse
if you have a physical problem you can take charge of your care, and feel like you are contributing to your own care
until a abuser takes control of their own lives they can not expect any changes in their lives
HOWEVER this was tasteless but if the party was being held in non-hospital related premises i don't see how this guy has anything to build a case

The article states: "I realize that emergency room personnel work under extreme pressure and need a time to blow off steam, but I think they need to find a healthier vehicle than a flyer that exploits someone else's illness." and I agree.

Being a trauma nurse for 16 years, I understand the dark humor. Ya gotta have it, so I'm trying not to judge them for that. But to me that's a bit too humiliating and wrong.

That's precisely why I thought it was funny, and why I thought that no one but those nurses should ever have seen it.

i totally get and enjoy dark humor...
but not at the expense of exploitation and humiliation.
i didn't see anything funny about it, at all.
