Need help with 3rd grade math????

  1. Look, I'm an RN right? You'd think I would be able to solve a simple third grade math problem. WELL, I CAN'T!!!!

    Can someone help me?

Susie wants to pack 45 books in boxes that hold 10 books or 1 book. How many ways can she pack the boxes?

    The correct answer is 5!

How is this so? There are many ways to pack the boxes:
1 book in 45 separate boxes
10 books in 4 boxes and 5 books in another.....And the list can go on. I want to know why 5 is the correct answer. Signed stumped, Thanks, Shygirl

    Here's the breakdown:

    10 in 4 large, 5 in 1 small each
    10 in 3 large, 15 in 1 small each
    10 in 2 large, 25 in 1 small each
    10 in 1 large, 35 in 1 small each
    45 in 1 small each

So, 5 different ways of packing!

Shygirl, I emphathize completely! I graduated nursing school with a 4.0 average and I cannot UNDERSTAND these bloody math problems they send the kids home with! Granted, I never was a math whiz but obviously I'm not STUPID. I made it thru chemistry and statistics, etc., with A's.

I think it is the way they WRITE the math books these days. I just don't THINK that way. And for the most part, I think the questions are stupid. I'd say...get bigger boxes!!

Amen! My first thought was "boxes that only hold one book? Why the he** bother packing them? You aren't saving any space!"

Dern! That boggled my mind!! We've been taking SAT tests this week and we did the math part today. I had NO clue how to do it and I'm in Honors Calculus. It's stuff I did back in 8th grade! I remember that!!

I miss the old books and boxes math's the grains and milligrams that drive me crazy now.

I want a rule that says you can only prescribe a dose in the unit of measure used on the vial! Better yet, lets dump those grains.

I think Susie should just throw away the books and get a computer.

OMG I hate the math that they teach these days, my daughter had to learn estimation, why???? What is wrong with basic math, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division. ERRRRRRRRRRR

And for all those math teachers that lied to us, I have never had to use a quadratic equasion in my entire life, so there!
