my son thinks he's Jim Carey

  1. My son loves to embarrass me in public and is known as the class clown at his school. Most of the time he is hillarious, but lately he's gone to far....FARTING IN PUBLIC (school, grocery store, grandma's, church)! I took all video games, TV, even books away from him. He just laughs even harder each time he finds a new place. I'm tempted to go into his class and fart and see how he likes it (just kidding, I'd die). Any advice?

Pay no attention to it - unless he starts lighting them that is

Hmmm Have you tried diet modification - give him a plate of whatever he hates most and sweetly explain that since his odors are so offensive it has to be caused by diet and that you are experimenting with his diet to see what will make the odor less noticable. Every day just give him something he hates - liver (low fibre = less gas) broccoli (Ah but the higher the fiber the faster the passage and that means less time for the bacteria to build up and cause smells) you get the picture make up a whole list of plausible explanations and feed those to him along with the new diet - he will soon get the idea.

It seems that boys around 11-13 years old seem to think that farting is REALLY hilarious, for some reason. I don't really know WHY, or what to do to help. I guess just try telling him IT IS NOT funny, and he will CONTINUE to lose priviledges if he insists. Wishing you the best of luck.

Edited because I think Gwenith's idea is the GREATEST!!

    Clasic!
perhaps his Dad can pass down the age old "pull my finger" method in an attempt to control his talents (perfect example of passing the technique is in the Cistine Chapel in Rome where God is depicted teaching Adam the same)... or perhaps you could slip him a little beano in his food (but that would only repress his natural talent)...as Rusty said "better out than in", I don't know if you ever went to a Catholic school and were taught by Nuns, but back in the day we all knew Nuns did not fart and it was evident in their faces....you know you can make a buck out of it by renting him out to people who want a jacuzzi but can't afford the real thing (he can provide the bubbles)...I say why be sad...opportunity abounds

Certainly, I don't wish to make light of this, I know it's embarrassing. However, consider: There are kids out there now the same age as your son who are joining gangs, becoming involved in drug sales, murder, and mayhem. There are kids out there strung out on dope at nine years old. Kids are committing suicide. Kids are taking guns to school. Kids are beating up other kids. Maybe you don't have it so bad. The next time he farts for funny, correct him, of course. But, in your mind, you might just want to say a prayer of thanks that he's here to embarrass you. Gunfire is so much worse than flatus.

He'll stop as soon as he's old enough to care what girls think about him, and that we generally don't consider gas a major turn-on .

My nephew (when he was about 9 or 10) would start yelling in public places "stranger, you are not my mom you are not my dad leave me alone help! help!" (he thoughtit was hilarious) of course the first time he pulled this I wanted to strangle him, but as everyone was staring at us thinking I was some kind of child abductor I couldn't really kill him like I wanted to so I just left him there. It kind of takes the fun out of it if you don't play along.

This same kid is now 17 and fairly normal, he is hilarious now in a warped twisted kind of way.

Ages 11-13??? How about ages 4-80 (with some exceptions of course). There are way too many movies and "guy" oriented tv shows that have numerous gassy jokes for this brand of humor to only apply to adolescent boys. I just think that for some reason the human male gets his funny bone tickled by bathroom humor. I agree it's best to try and ignore it and certainly tell him it's not funny at all, especially in public.

If it makes you feel any better, I took my 6-year-old and his 7-year-old friend to the zoo last week. Now the zoo we went to is big on conservation and was a very educational place with plenty of enriching activities. Want to know what those two got out of it? Giggling uncontrollably outside of the monkey compound because they could see the monkey's "weiners" and one of them actually urinated in front of the boys. Along with every other little boy in attendance, all they could do was discuss the monkey's parts and their various bodily functions. I was so embarrassed and threatened to sell both of them to the zoo, seeing how they would fit in so well with the monkeys.

Hey my teenage daughter thought she was being funny and paying me back for something by walking around the craft show we were at telling people that hse was diabetic and reacting and I was refusing to feed her. I could have killed her...but the funny thing was no one paid attention to her. Of course that could be scarey if she was telling the truth.

Oh well I have to agree as embarrassing as it is, at least they aren't into drugs or gangs ot the like.

My son is 12 so I know what you're talking about. The problem is, when he does fart on purpose I usually about die laughing and I don't know why I do that but it's hard to discipline a kid when you're laughing at him. I guess I haven't grown out of middle school humor yet.
