My poor birds!

  1. I had a nest of baby birds up in the roof of my porch, don't know what kind cause they were hidden. I didn't have the heart to get rid of them. A huge 7 ft long black snake got in there today and killed all of them My 3y/o dd was sooo upset, she has "listened" for the birds everyday for weeks. I was so mad at that snake:angryfire To top it all off, my dh was leaving for work and I was taking oldest to the doc (sinus infection) and dh just leaves me to deal with it!! Thank goodness for my Dad! He came and got the darn thing down and took it to the woods. That poor momma bird was so pitiful, she was diving and striking the snake with her beak to try to drive it off, even got in the nest with the snake to try to get him off her babies Just broke my heart. The snake only ate one of them, so I guess the weight killed the others? Anyway, now I am upset, and scared that there may be more of them around the house. Anyone know of repellents that work?

BTW, I should have put a warning in the title, I know some people don't want to be reading about snakes eating baby birds, sorry I didn't think of that!

And now I have the hebbie-jebbies and jump at small noises! And the creepy-crawlies that have me swatting at every muscle jump on my person!

I'm so sorry to hear about your baby birds. I would be mad/upset too.
I live in the country and hate snakes.......so I through my cat litter out around the outskirts of my property, that seems to be working........cats keep snakes away because they eat the stuff that the snakes want to eat, but I know it makes me feel better to put the cat litter out there.

Sounds like something a turkey lover would do!

Criss - that is so sad about your birds, and your poor daughter too

The baby woke up a few minutes ago crying about it, again. Poor baby. She has a special affection for all animals, and they were "her" birds. She told everyone about them. I wish I had kept my mouth shut when dh said "what is he (the snake) doing in the birds nest?" but jeez, what did he think he was doing? And the baby heard me say "he is eating the birds, you idiot"..........well I didn't say you idiot but I was thinking it. Heat of the moment and all that. Thanks guys, glad I'm not the only one that this would have upset.

That is awful! I would be just as heartbroken as your child.

I love my wild birds, and go out of my way to protect them from predators by keeping my bushes trimmed up off the ground to prevent the neighborhood cats from hiding under them. We also put a fence/skirt around the little cottage in our back yard because it is elevated on posts, and I have seen cats snatch ground feeding birds from under there. And, then there are the hawks... The small birds would all pack themselves into our forsythia bush, and start screaming loudly in a panic. It's a distinctly different sound, and very hard to ignore. In the winter, that bush hasn't any leaves so the poor things are not even hidden. They make a horrific racket. I find myself running out there in pajamas, since I work at night, yelling at hawks. I'm sure it's a frightening sight for the hawks if not for the neighbors!

Snakes are not a problem where we live now. I'll have to remember the cat litter trick for when we move.

I'll admit to being a fanatical bird loving nut. Your snake story is very sad.
I am so sorry that your child is upset.

That is sad, but that's nature. I feel worse for the birds that are kept in tiny cages their whole lives to be killed for human consumption....or the baby male chicks that aren't wanted and are simply thrown away alive.

I hope your little one isn't sad for too long!
