My grandfather passed away...

  1. We were expecting this to happen but not for a few more days. He was 83 and admitted Wed. morning with pneumonia. They couldn't get his BP up so they put him in the MICU. His tests showed he had developed ARDS (he went through this in summer 2000: pneumonia then ARDS-was on home o2 for 6-8 weeks and recovered). My family called me and told me he was not doing good-they told my grandmother that he would need to go on the vent within 24 hours-but my grandparents had talked about life support and code status (Thank God) and he didn't want that.
    My DH and I went to the hospital today to see him. The minute I saw him...I got "that" feeling-his color was mottled; his BP was down (SBP 80s at that time); sats were 80-81% with bi-pap (don't know the settings). He started declining then. We thought he would make it through the night but he didn't: at the evening family visit, we were told he wasn't going to live much longer. They were moving him to a private room out on the floors so we could be with him and he passed away during the transfer None of us really got to say the good-bye we wanted....

    Just a shock in a way...and then not. He'd had a CABG 4 years ago with a mitral valve replacement and he going into renal failure (had been for the past 2 years)...

    We don't believe he suffered; we asked that he be kept comfortable and he was...

    I sure am going to miss him.....

    Sorry to rambled on....just very sad...

    Thank you for *listening*....

    Warm thoughts to you and your family. {{{HUGS}}}

    He will be missed, I'm sure. In reading your post, it does seem like he was comfortable. He also was with people who loved him, throughout his stay in the hospital. Still, though. . . it's sad.

    What's important is that he had people around him who loved him, and reading your post, that was obviously the case.

    so sorry to hear this. You have my deepest sympathy. Lost my gram one year ago July 10 and the pain is still pretty fresh. I am so sorry.
