My daughter is reading...The Bible??

  1. My daughter has all of a sudden taken an interest in reading the bible.
Now this might not be such a big deal but she has always been such a devout athiest that it is just surprising.
She says that all her friends are always saying things church and bible related that she decided to learn more about it.
So far she is on page 18.
She says she should be done in a couple of months.

Wow, rusty! Sounds like a pretty neat take the initiative to learn about something she doesn't buy into..

It would freak me out a bit if I were in your shoes, but I say good for her. She is interested and took the time to learn about something for herself. Sounds like a very level headed girl.

Sounds like she comes from parents who (within limits, of course) allow their kids to question, and to search out their own answers/find their own way/destiny/life, with unconditional love.

will you and Robin adopt me??

Well good for her checking things out and forming her own opinions!

I think it's great! drawing her own conclusions instead of listening to what others are telling her ABOUT the bible. I think everyone should.

I worked with an RN once who maintained that all the Bibles of the world should be burned because "reading the Bible just makes people crazy." She was referring to all the Bible thumping paranoid Schizophrenics we saw, of course. I have never advocated any type of book burning but I would keep an eye out for behavior changes, Rusty.

Then again it sounds like she is pretty well put together. Gary

Kids always find ways to rebel against their parents. Don't make a big deal about it and it should go away. My dad's a fundamentalist atheist and ex hippy so I had to be quite creative. Even though i did not go to the extreme of reading the bible i did cause some trouble.

    or maybe not.
faith is an individual choice....Russ and Robin can be proud that they have raised an intelligent daughter who researches the beliefs of others before she forms an opinion on them...and if she decides to follow this path i do beleive she will follow it in a level headed manner...rather than and uneducated and unrestrained fervor... way to go for raising a cool kid Russ :kiss

You know, I've read the Bible about 3 times in my lifetime (>50 yrs.). I AM a (mostly) devout Catholic, and I learned one major thing the first time I read it through (back when I was 18-19): most Bible thumping maniacs didn't KNOW what the heck they were talking about! They would quote a couple of verses out of context; or twist it around to support THEIR interpretation of what it said (this was recently seen here in the masterbation website on the "M" thread).

Good for her for taking the initiative to read it; even if she doesn't believe it, it is a great collection of wonderful ancient human stories which reads better than todays' daily newspaper and it reains just as pertinent. The poetry is wonderful too.

I actually went so far as to go to church for a while when I wa a child, Rusty, altho my parents were both non-religious. They were fine with me exploring. After I did that for a while and read the Bible, then I KNEW I was an atheist lol.
