my cousin is in surgery right now

  1. She is 22 years old and has been living with kidney disease for the last 10 years. Today they found a match and it is apparently an 80% match. I guess they're harvesting the donor kidney (or kidneys) right now. She's in surgery as we speak. I really don't know a lot about this sort of thing. I don't know what the likelihood of this being sucessful is (other than the fact that it's an 80% match). She has progressed in the last few years to having to go on hemodialysis three times a week and the last time I saw her (2 days ago) she looked terrible and very edematous.

She is AB- and has had a hemolytic reaction in the past when receiving a transplant which ended the hope of her being able to receive my aunt's kidney.

Please tell me what you know about her chances and this procedure.

I beleive we need to page Jnette or another one of our dialysis nurses to the thread. I wish I could give you some information, but I'm afraid my knowledge is rather limited.

I can offer the best medicine that money can buy.

MY SON HAS A KIDNEY TRANSPLANT, FOR SEVEN YEARS NOW. HE HAD NEPHROTIC SYNDROME AND IT GOT SO BAD THEY REMOVED BOTH KIDNEYS. HE EXPERIENCED BOTH TYPES OF DIALYSIS AND THE DOCTORS DIDN'T THINK HE'D SURVIVE. HE'LL BE 18 THIS SUMMER AND IS DOING JUST FINE THANK GOD. HANG IN THERE AND KEEP PRAYING FOR HER.

Well she made it trough the surgery. She is in reverse isolation for the next 10 days.

This is so incredible guys! We never even thought a transplant was a possibility anymore! She and us had accepted that it just wasn't meant to be, and she was living her live one day at a time. She was helping to raise her brother's daughter because she figured she'd never have the chance to raise her own. And are her and that little girl ever close! She had started writing poetry lately to help express her frustrations and desires.

Imagine, she may now have a new lease on life!
