My BIL house burned to the ground

  1. Today my BIL house caught fire and burned to the ground, beyond the ground actually. The basement is still smoldering. The only thing standing is the chimney. Everyone out safe, thank God. Everyone was home sleeping when it started, one of my nieces woke up because she heard something crash, by that time there was only enough time to be able to throw some cloths on and get out. Everything is gone.
My other BIL is a volunteer firefighter and got a call from his son while he was at work to tell him what was happening, this BIL works at the same place as my husband so they both took off and then called me. At the time no one knew if everyone was out or not. I took off and found the family across the street with neighbors. It was bitterly cold today, and the wind was just whipping, the house was an old farmhouse and there was simply no saving any of it. Thank God it didn't take the barn too. Had to move the horses out because no one will be there to take care of them. Let me tell you moving Clydsdales who can smell the smoke into a trailer is not a fun thing to have to do.
The family is staying at a hotel tonight, the insurance company came right out and issued them a check so they could get some clothes etc... At least this actually gave us something to laugh about though. My husband and this BIL are identical twins, the lady with the insurance co. is someone we all went to school with, and she managed to write out the check to my husband instead of his brother not realizing she had the wrong one. Poor BIL didn't know whether to laugh or cry. My hubby just took it down to the bank and cashed it though. Nice thing about small towns, called the someone who works at the bank we also went to school with, explained what had happened and viola, bank's open for business late Saturday afternoon.
None the less any good thoughts for my family would be appreciated.

I'm very sorry to hear about the fire and I'm glad everyone is ok. The winds were whipping yesterday, hard to control a fire under those conditions. Glad the Clydesdales were saved too.
