MSN Explorer Computer Problems. Anyone else?

  1. Our computer is having major issues! Recently, it has beem taking forever for my computer to do anything, especially once I get online. I get a ton more pop up ads now with "Microsoft" in the corner. We have MSN Explorer as our browser, but never had any probs like this. It's like this computer has a mind of its own. My computer downloaded on its own some "Lycos" program that ended up on my desktop. "Warnings" pop up saying that we need Spyware becuz. I am just frustrated about this whole thing.

Is there a virus going around? Anyone else having this problem too?

I'm guessing that you have picked up some crapware along the way. Its not technically a virus but it is certainly unwanted. Do you currently have any anti-spyware programs on your computer such as Ad-aware, Spybot, Spysweeper, Pest Patrol, etc? I've had to install several different ones on the computer the kids use because they tend to surf to a lot of sites that are loaded with this junk.

Here's a good article from PC Magazine explaining spyware and recommending some anti-spyware software you can use to clean up your 'puter.

As for stopping pop-ups, I downloaded the Google toolbar, which has a pop-up stopper, and I have been very happy with it. A few get through, but not many. Brian uses it too.

I have AOL, but I also have MSN Internet Explorer b/c my DSL provider offers it and I do get alot of popups even when i'm not online. It drives me crazy b/c with AOL, I don't have any popups b/c I have them control it. It makes me resent MSN and I wish I could disable it from my computer, but don't know how. I pay for AOL b/c I love it! If I doesn't stop, I'll have to call somebody on the other end.:angryfire

Popswatter Does work but there are sites out there that you cannot access with it on. Some of the games sites (I love jigsaws) will not load.

I use Yahoo as my homepage and it has a nice "free" pop-killer. I don't get any at all anymore and it seems to work fine. There are a few sites that I use that will not load well because it sees it as an ad but you can customize it to allow them. Mike

    Not experienced this.

Using PC-Cillin. My bud's been a computer repairer for years and he swears this is the program to use.

Try downloading the newest updates from MSN Messenger. You will get pop-up blocker with it. I did it at the office yesterday and it already has blocked over 50 pop-ups...............Hope that this helps you...........
