Miner "Blaine" on Letterman

  1. He's amazing. Telling the story...it's chilling. He has kept an amazing sense of humor about it all. He said one of the guys down there said, "I hope they are going to pay us overtime for all of this!" Hope some of you get to see it. BTW, he is a big time HUNK!! So good to see him there to tell the story!

He was kinda cute wasn't he? I can't imagine how his family, let alone his wife felt all the time they were trapped. I see a movie of the week coming soon. Of course that would be nice to have something w/ a happy ending to it. Laura LPN

Blaine, was he the miner who resembles Nicholas Cage?

Yes, it went quite well. I feared it might be to much for him but he handled it well. I thought Letterman did a good job on interviewing him. He just let him set and tell the story and did not push him. Most important Letterman asked respectful questions. You could hear a pin drop in that audience. I thought the whole thing was quite riviting.

I saw him on t.v. and am amazed at how humble he is. I also live in Western Pa and the men here are manly, hunting, fishing, outdoorsman type, I think that may have helped the miners somewhat. His wife was lucky as her father was also trapped in the mine. Isn't it wonderful to see that communities can come together, I cried when they announced all 9 were alive. I also never gave much thought to the governor before but I have a new respect for him, he never left the site and was truly dedicated in the effort to rescue the miners. I love a happy ending!!!

I hope they gave him a few bucks for the appearance. He probably has some serious questions about how he is going to be paying his mortgage 6 months from now.

Shouldn't those miners be receiving 77 hours of overtime pay? Time and a half and double time since part of it went through the weekend?

How about some major hazard pay??

Well, not only should they be paid overtime, this is workers comp!!!
There's some things to consider - if they are determined not to be able to return to underground mining, the employer can still offer them work that does not involve going underground. They will all have to go for a disability determination. If they all decide to just quit, then they are eligible for a settlement depending on the degree of permanent disability they are determined to have suffered as a result. BUT, in some states, if you quit even when the employer has made accomodations for your disability, you will not be eligible for job retraining and the benefits you get while undergoing vocational rehabilitation.

Not an easy road they will be going down. But I'm sure there are attorneys who have already contacted them.

An Entertainment reporter just said they will be paid $150,000 a piece for the rights to do their story on TV. It might even be true. I don't begrudge them a bit, however I wish there could be a way of rewarding the people the saved them.
