Mercedes or Lexus?

  1. I am looking into buying a new car for myself as a graduation gift for all the hard work I've done over the past eight years. I really want an upscale car and so far I'm considering a Mercedes (C class or CLK) and a Lexus ES 300. Which car would you pick? Any of you own a really nice car that you've found to be really reliable? I'm looking at cars in the $30,000 price range.
Thanks in advance for your responses

I think the Mercedes are a bit overpriced for what you get. I was comparing the C class with the Acura RSX-S, and with the Acura, I got more amenities standard for a lesser cost (more horsepower, too!). If I had a little bit more money to spend (I was looking in the $25,000 price range) I would have gotten an Infiniti G35. Whatever you do, do your research! Check out and for reviews.

my inlaws have the mercedes and it is constantly falling apart. Operator errors? Or piece of junk? No idea. Check out how much it is going to cost to insure it too. Tags, Taxes and Insurance always weigh in for me.

My choice would be a Lexus. Extremely reliable and well made.

I have a friend who owns one of each, and I have heard him remark how he was disappointed in the quality of the Mercedes (nothing specific, and I didn't think to ask), that he thinks he paid mainly for the name. Now, the Lexus, on the other hand: he and his wife are VERY pleased with it (even though it's about 10 yr old!).
Happy hunting, and yes, do your research and test-drive both. You alone will be the one who will "live" with your decision.

Pokey, while during your research reading on cars, how about reading Suze Orman's "The Laws of Money". You may decide you want to make an investment in yourself.

and to think, I had to hide my car from the repo man yesterday...

...but, I would definitely go for the Lexus!

Mercedes are the best made cars in the world according to my spouse who knows all things cars and is probably going to be getting a Mercedes convertable as his next car. The dealerships treat you well when you come in for service too.

Whatever you get enjoy your gift to yourself. You've earned it.

Volkswagen Jetta for handles beautifully & is fairly good on gas. I do wish that I'd gone for the diesel Jetta, though...and leather seats.

As for the decision between Lexus & Mercedes, My gut instinct is to go with a good used mercedes, one with a trackable service record.
